Temple Shrimp Salmon Fly Dressing
Fly Tied By Tay Salmon Fly
Rear Skirt:- Red Bucktail Wound Around
Body:- Black Floss
Rib:- Silver Holographic Flat Braid
Wing:- Yellow Bucktail Wound Around
Head:- Red
This pattern was created by Mr Malcolm Campbell the Head Ghillie on the Lees beat of the River Tweed. Its name comes from the famous Temple Pool at the top of the beat. With it's Yellow/Red colour combination it is a very effective fly thoughout the seaon just varying the size of the fly to suit the river conditions.
It is also a very close rival to the Junction Shrimp when the water is high and carrying some colour.

The Scottish Government: To reverse the decision by the Salmon Net Fishing Association of Scotland [SNFAS] to resume net fishing in the spring after a 14 year voluntary cessation.
The Scottish Government: To reverse the decision by the Salmon Net Fishing Association of Scotland [SNFAS] to resume net fishing in the spring after a 14 year voluntary cessation.
Petition by
1. Wild
Salmon numbers are at an all time low, particularly fish entering our
rivers in spring. The voluntary agreement above along with Catch and Release by
anglers has seen this particular group of fish , at best, “hold their
own”! To begin netting at this time of the year again would do
irreparable damage to this early running group/cohort collectively known as spring fish.
2. If we have no fish entering our rivers in the early part of the year then many full time jobs will be threatened as revenue from those early anglers is lost. In 2003 "Salmon Angling" was found to be worth £74 Million to the Scottish economy, supporting 2800 full time jobs, mainly in rural areas with extremely fragile economies. A shorter season will see those full time jobs become part time, attracting, not young families, but older people to do a seasonal job.
3. The support industry we have for salmon fishing in Scotland would also suffer; from tackle shops, to tea shops. Petrol stations, hotels, guest houses, B&Bs and not forgetting all their suppliers! Although we have no new figures, to the Scottish Economy, salmon fishing will now be worth around double that of the figure above.
4. We are not talking about a few nets-men and wealthy landowners here. No, we are talking about the jobs of 2800 ordinary people, their families and the longevity of an extraordinarily “Scottish” way of life; a way of life with so much, yet untapped tourism potential. To threaten the livlihoods of many for that of few makes no sense at all.
5. The Scottish Government will only support the netting of wild salmon when a "Harvestable Surplus Occurs" FACT. This is certainly not the case with Spring Salmon, or, some would argue - Summer or Autumn Salmon.
6. Calling a halt this madness will at least give those remaining fish a "chance" to spawn and in doing so producing the next generation, which hopefully, we will manage better than in the past.

Salmon Fishing Trip On The River Tay With Tay Salmon Fly Part 1
This week we have been out chasing the River Tay salmon with our deadly flies. We had booked on the Murthly 1 Beat with Ghillie Donald Tritton. After the morning meet and greets we were allocated our pools for the morning. I made my way to the "well" with my trusty MacKenzie DTX and my favourite summer fly the Executioner. On my 5th cast I hooked a spirited fish which was swiftly landed and it was a coloured hen salmon of around 7lbs.
After quickly releasing the salmon I went back into the pool and shortly afterwards I was in to another salmon this one was slightly bigger at around 9lbs and was swiftly returned.
The rest of the morning failed to produce any further action to we returned to the hut for lunch. During lunch the sun came out and was rather bright so I decided not to fish the afternoon session and save the efforts for the evening..........

The Usual Shrimp Salmon Fly
After seen the old Scandinavian pattern The Usual, I had the idea in my head of turning it in to a shrimp fly pattern, I played with a few materials until I was happy with the final product. The Usual Shrimp was born.
Since I introduced this fly to a few of my fishing friends it has taken quite a few fish for them, their main like for the fly is its ability to tempt the bigger fish.
Off all the reports that I've had back about the fly for anglers the average size of salmon landed on the fly is 17lbs.
I have a few more new patterns that are in testing at the moment and hope to have them available soon.

Water conditions permitting, two boats and 2 ghillies work the beat, offering every type of Salmon Fishing for our guests' enjoyment. Our beat is attached to Hilton Hotel's Scottish flagship hotel, Hilton Dunkeld House, from where a short stroll in the morning leads to our fishing hut.
We can offer tuition for the novice and informative advice on flies/lures/lines etc for more experienced anglers.
We can accommodate up to eight anglers daily on the beat, with up to two rods in each boat (harling, spinning or bait fishing). For safety reasons we feel that only one person can fly-fish from the boat at a time. The use of both banks allows the angler access to uncongested water even in lower water conditions.

BANK - Fishing is fom the bank only with no ghillie supplied unless you elect to pay for one separately.
BOAT - Fishing has to be booked for two people fishing in the same boat. If only one person wants to fish, he still has to pay for both rods to cover the cost of the ghillie and boat provided. For safety resaons we do not recommend that more than one person fly fishes from the boat at the same time.
