The Cauld Pool - The Lees Beat - River Tweed - Scotland

Looking up the famous Cauld Pool on the Lees Beat of the River Tweed.

The Lees beat is a two mile horseshoe of the river Tweed around Coldstream. There are famous pools such as the Temple Pool and the Cauld Stream, as well as the almost equally (at times) prolific Learmouth Stream, Back of the Wall, Glide, Bags, Annay and several other smaller pools. The Lees beat is well situated in the river as it is accessible to fish in low water and one of the first beats where fish hold up when the river is consistently high.

The Lees has split ownership between the owners and a family trust, but is fished as one beat. Many weeks are let to one tenant for the whole week, but there are also half week and daily lets, the latter mainly in the spring and summer. In the months of June, July and August, for the most part two rods are let with the other two being retained by the owners who use them sparingly and often not at all, especially when the water is low and fishing space shortened. In addition, in June and July the local angling association is given access to the lower part of the beat, after 6pm only, to fish for salmon and sea trout.

The three boatmen, Malcolm Campbell, Paul Hume and Bruce Goodwin are hugely experienced and have been working at the Lees for many years, and 3 of the best ever years in terms of catches have come in the last 5 years when they have been the boatmen.

Please note that the owners reserve the Temple Pool on Saturdays, the Annay on weekdays from 1st September to 30th November, and the right to fish with one rod after 5pm throughout the season.

Upper Hendersyde Beat - River Tweed - Scotland

The Upper Hendersyde beat on the River Tweed is situated at Kelso in Roxburghshire immediately below the Junction beat and above the Sprouston beat. It comprises approximately one mile of double bank fishing with four excellent holding pool, Upper Winter Cast, Winter Cast, Mill Stream and Ferry. There are two boats on the beat and the fishing is for three rods.
There is a full time ghillie on the beat, Mr Ronnie McElrath, and his services are included in the rent. The beat is normally let by the week for a maximum of three rods. Occassionally, half weeks will be let.
The owner is a keen supporter of the Tweed Angling Code and Spring Conservation Measures, and consequently encourages all tenants to follow these guidelines.

River Tay Salmon Fishing - Murthly Beat 1

Murthly Beat 1 is one of the best fly fishing waters on the Tay.
Murthly 1
Beat alternating as follows
2014
Low water on Mon, Wed, Fri
Top water on Tues, Thur, Sat

Both the Upper and Lower Beats mainly consist of swiftly flowing runs and pools which all have a good draw on them, ideal for the fly. Fly fishing is the preferred method of fishing unless the water is high.
These beats fish well throughout the season. Many spring salmon seem to make their first stop in the Murthly area and so a fresh springer can always be expected. Then in the summer the grilse fishing can be first rate. There is usually a good head of fresh grilse and conditions are perfect for the fly. Then given a lift in the water big catches of back end fish can then be made in the autumn.
The beat is set among stunning woodland scenery with impressive stands of mature Douglas Fir and other species giving the whole beat a very grand feel. There is one ghillie on the beat and one boat but much of the river can easily and safely be fished by wading, especially in low water. There is also a comfortable hut on each beat with full facilities.
Any booking less than 2 days prior should be made directly with Bidwells.

1st Salmon Of The Murthly 2 Beat, River Tay, Scotland this season, this 12lb sea licer was landed this morning.

Description

Murthly Beat 2 is one of the best beats on the Tay. For fly fishing it has few equals. There are two separate beats the Upper Beat and Stenton which are fished on alternate days.
2014:
- Top water on Mon, Wed, Fri
- Stenton on Tues, Thur, Sat
One pool, the Island Pool, is fished on all six days. Both the Upper Beat and Stenton mainly consist of swiftly flowing runs and pools which all have a good draw on them, making them ideal for the fly.
In low water conditions the Island Pool especially fishes wonderfully and is easily one of the best grilse pools on the Tay. Then given a lift in the water big catches of back end fish can then be made in the autumn.
The beat is set among stunning woodland scenery with impressive stands of mature Douglas Fir and other species giving the whole beat a very grand feel. Cascader Conehead Salmon Fly - Tay Salmon Fly

The Cascader Salmon Fly is a very good variation of the already very popular Cascade. The Cascader has a fritz body which increases the flies profile in the water and will no doubt create a bit of disturbance when it swings across the taken salmon in the pool
