River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th March 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th March 2017

The rising water over the weekend left us faced again with mucky brown water at the start of the week.  There was virtually zero Fishing below the Teviot confluence as a combination of high water and a return of the awful chocolate colour spoilt yet another weeks sport.

Above the Teviot fish were caught with the Floor’s beats and Makerstoun picking away. Mr Alex Knox owner of The Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso, landed a lovely fish from Upper Floors on a Tay Salmon Fly, Black and Yellow Pot Belly Pig. A superb 21lber was also caught on Tuesday.

Speaking with Makerstoun's Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle, “It was a good week considering the conditions with 6 Springer’s landed, some of which were sea liced. The Jora Gold was amongst the successful flies for the week. Quite a few fish seen in the beat on Saturday

On the Junction, Dr Hennigan’s party landed 6 along with 1 Sea Trout. Fishing was limited due to the water conditions with Wednesday seeing the best of the action with 3 landed, while on Saturday there was a lot of activity unfortunately 4 fish were lost.

Lower Birgham had the only fish caught below the Teviot Junction

At Upper North Wark fishing was mostly done in coloured water throughout the week. Some brief encounters and a couple of Sea Trout help to keep the spirits up.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 4” and the water temperature is 46.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would recommend Upper Makerstoun, Lower Birgham and Upper North Wark, these beats all been well should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

Looking ahead to next week the water levels are starting to steady off and should slowly settle and drop in as the week progresses. Looking at what flies and lures for the coming week, water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 6 or 8, tubes around the inch size should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Ghillie, Underghillie & Girnal Shrimp should bring success, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala,  Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 18th March 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 18th March.

After what seems like weeks of fishing in flood affected coloured water we finally had decent conditions and thankfully this resulted in the best weekly catches for the season to-date. Fish were caught throughout the middle and lower river with 77 fish reported.

Fishing on the Junction the Morrison Party had 23 fish for the week up to 16lbs, with 10 of these fish being caught on a memorable day’s spring fishing on Monday.

Speaking with Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch he reports “we landed seven on the fly for the week with the biggest weighing 15lbs. All fish were liced apart from one"
Sprouston had 3 for the week with Mr Rob Ellis (1) and Mr Ronnie McElrath (2) the successful anglers.

Lower Birgham had 2 on the fly towards the end of the week, both fish around the 8lb mark.

At Upper North Wark we had a good start to the week with beat owner Mr Martin Pratt landing a sea liced 7lber on a Willie Gunn Templedog fly from the Snipe. On the same morning Mr Simon Cotton landed a sea liced 10lber from the Mill Stream on the CeeCee fly. Mr Cotton good fortune continued on Tuesday when he caught a 2nd fish, a lovely 10lber from the Snipe, again on the CeeCee fly. On Friday Mr Howard Lane landed the 1st Sea Trout from the beat this season.

The Lower water conditions towards the end of the week helped the beats below Coldstream and it was good to see Ladykirk and Milne Graden catch fish.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 11” and the water temperature is 45.

Looking ahead to next week the water levels were all rising today (Sunday) and the clarity was quite beery but not as coloured as one might have expected. The forecast looks a bit unsettled this week. For those fishing the fly this week it might require the sinking lines to brought back out and you might be well advised to put a spinning rod in the car just in case! Looking at what flies and lures for the coming week I’d expect the Black and Yellow, Blacko’s Dee Special and Monkey style patterns to continue to bring success once the water clarity improves, while on the spinning front the "Carrot" Rapala, Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 4th March 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 4th March

The week started with the dirty water that plagued the end of last week. Two 8ft Floods over the weekend saw the river pretty much unfishable at the start of the week, and the river below the Teviot junction held the colour for much longer than we would have liked.

The water clarity began to clear above the Teviot on Wednesday and Mr Nigel Devine fishing Lower Floors had a good day landing 3 Springer’s on the fly, while Upper Floors picked away landing 3 for the week.

On Thursday Mr Ben Richardson fishing the Junction landed a lovely 16lb fish; a 2nd fish of 15lb was also landed by Mr Colin Chisholm.

On Friday the water clarity was reasonable and there were fish caught below Kelso for this first time this week. The Junction landed 3 before lunch, with Mr Shunshuke Washiya landed fish of 9lb and 12lb and Mr Willie Wood landed a 12lb all fish were sea liced, a further 4 fish were lost.

Fishing on Hendersyde Mr Andrew Taylor landed two fish weighing 7lb and 14lb, while Mr James Harrison landed a superb fish of 17lbs. On Sprouston Mr Andrew Edge landed two on the fly.

Fishing on Upper North Wark, Mr Jonathan Graham landed a nice sea liced fish on 9lbs from the Mill Stream on the fly, he also had a brief encounter with a 2nd fish. South Wark and Lower North Wark also had fish.

On Saturday morning we were greeted with rising water again, it just seems never ending lately. However it would appear that there are a few fish in the system, we just need the conditions to settle down and do we can get fishing properly.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3ft 3” and the water temperature is 40.

Looking ahead to next week the forecast looks quite settled. The water is carrying colour this morning and rising at the tops which I’d think is snow melt after a few mild days. Once this colour pushes through and the weather settles the settled we should hopefully see a few fish landed.Looking at what flies and lures for the coming week I’d expect the Black and Yellow, Blacko’s Dee Special and Monkey style patterns to continue to bring success once the water clarity improves, while on the spinning front the “Carrot” Rapala and Toby Salmo should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
