River Tweed River Report Week Ending 6^th May

Water conditions are getting to summer level now, but with the big spring tides over last weekend some fish have entered the river, with the catches mainly coming from the bottom beats. 63 fish were reported for the week with some Sea Trout starting to appear as well. The mood on the river as a mix of anger and disbelief with the new circulating of the Gardo netting station down at Berwick killed 18 Spring Salmon on Monday.

The Junction beat had a decent week given the conditions and landed 10 fish. Mr Richard Thomas landed fish of 8lb and 15lb on Tuesday, Mr Neil O’Shea landed a 12lber while Tom O’Shea landed fish of 7lb and 6lb. Mr Keith Frances finishes of the week with a fine 8lber.

Between Kelso and Coldstream catches are still quite quiet, Sprouston 1, Hendersyde 4 and Birgham Dub 1, Lower Birgham 3, West Learmouth 2 were the only beats between Kelso and Coldstream to get some sport.

Those fishing below Coldstream faired a bit better in the lower water conditions with 27 fish reported.

Ladykirk reports “Conditions were hard with the east wind and cloudless skies the level is now very low but nothing to stop fish running should they wish. From what I saw or did not seem to be more accurate was very few fish. One or two rods were luck to find fish in the beat and as we know fresh spring fish are ready takers. We finished on 13 fish for the week. With no change in the weather for next week it will be same again

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 51.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Pedwell, Ladykirk and Horncliffe beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The next week the water levels are expected to remain pretty steady with the dry weather and cold nights we have had lately. The forecast looks quite settled with no significant rain in the forecast, and we could really do with wee lift would to freshen things up. Conditions are really good for the majority of beats towards the lower end of the river at the moment and given these lower water conditions I would expect fish to start being caught below Coldstream.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Girnal Shrimp and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
