River
Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th June
After the
much needed rain last week, the week began with quite a black peaty water,
hopes were high after the rise in water that the fish would finally get a
chance to get moving up the river. Fishing conditions were pretty good over the
week with a bit of wind making it tricky in certain areas. The week proved to
be the best week of the season so far with 189 Salmon and 47 Sea Trout
reported. There has been a few more caught on non-reporting beats and with some
beats now been onto Summer Lets the ghillie service is reduced with some not
reporting online during this period. From the information online that I can
gather the Season So Far total is 1308 Salmon and 225 Sea Trout.
Fish were
caught throughout the system, above Kelso catches were well spread out with
some good catches made on the Mertoun Beats with 27 and Upper Floors with 27
inc a great day of 12 on Tuesday. Middle Pavilion Had 3 for the week inc a
nice fish for Mr Tim Briggs from the Boat Sheil.
Bemersyde
Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Not much happening up here, 4 Salmon and 1
Sea Trout for the week”
Mr Brian
Douglas fishing at Lower Mertoun reports “Fished the first 3 days, 11 Salmon
and 4 Sea Trout. On Monday took fish on the spinner then as the water cleared
we were getting them on the fly. Carat Fly done best and Mr Neil Jones had a
couple on the Kinermony Killer”
Makerstoun
Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “8 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout. 87 year old
Venetian Mario Morenos landed his first salmon on the fly, this was a change of
tactics for Mario as he is an expert skin diver spear fisherman.”
Between
Kelso and Coldstream catches improved this week with 61 fish reported in this
area. Junction 16, Hendersyde 17 with the best of the catches, while the Wark
area seen an improvement in catches with 14 fish landed. Mr Colin Tait had some
good sport on Lower North Wark landing a nice fish and having a good few chases
on an Editor Sunray Shadow from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
Hendersyde
Head Boatman Ketch reports “A good week, resulting from a lift at the start of
the week. 17 Salmon mostly fresh and some sea trout starting to make an
appearance. Biggest 14lbs”
With
the water levels dropping in the beats below Coldstream managed to get back
fishing and 20 fish were reported with the best of the catches were at Ladykirk
9 & Tillmouth 7.
Mr
Jonathan Lane fishing on Ladykirk landed a fine salmon and sea trout on a ½”
Ghillie Tube Fly from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk.
The
week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft and the water temperature is 60.
Looking
at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Lennel, Ladykirk, Horncliffe
and Tweedhill beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.
The
forecast this coming week looks fairly warm with light south westerly wind,
there may be an odd shower on Wednesday but no real rain forecast for this
coming week.
Water
temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or
12 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie,
Underghillie, Editor Sunray Shadow, Editor and if you fancy giving a Sunray
Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly
leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala
Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now
the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always
listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
