River Tweed River Report Week Ending 3rd June 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 3rd June

The catches this week remained quite consistent over the week with water levels dropping to summer levels. With the dropping water levels the catches were most focused below Kelso. There are some issues with blanket weed getting wrapped around the flies on regular basis. Hopefully get a bit of water soon to clean out the riverbed.

Above Kelso catches were unsurprisingly quiet, Middle Mertoun having the best fishing with 6 for the week. Middle Pavillion had 4 inc Mr John Hatton on his first visit to the beat from the Boat Shiel on a small cascade tube. Lower Pavillion with 1 also enjoyed the limited success.

Upper and Lower Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “Seen a couple of small fresh fish pushing through the shallow water with their backs out and tails thrashing on Friday. We caught 1 on Saturday the successful angler Mr Paddy Tomkins. Strange the fish are so keen to run up in such poor conditions”

Between Kelso and Coldstream catches improved this week with 54 fish reported in this area. Junction 11, Hendersyde 14 and Birgham Dub 10 with the best of the catches.

The Junction had 11 for the week with Mr John Middleton-Walker and Mr Ollie Greaves been amongst the successful anglers on the beat.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Better week considering it’s so low. Ended up with 14 Salmon, up to14lbs and a Sea Trout. We lost more than our fair share as well”

On Birgham Dub, the Somerville party fishing the first 3 days were catching the fish mainly in the mornings fishing summer style, up near the top on full floating gear and tiny flies.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Best week of the season for us, fresh fish and good water levels. Just need more takes”

Given the water height the fishing below Coldstream was a quiet this week, 24 fish were reported with the best of the catches were at Ladykirk 6 & Tweedhill 11. Tweedhill had one of their best May’s for a few years finishing the month with 43 Springers. Well done Ginger.
Mr Douglas Aitken fishing at Ladykirk & Birgham Dub  reports We did not fish much due to weather and the algae and weed in the river. Managed a couple of wee grilse and big brown trout and a lovely sea trout for young Tom (11) at Birgham. Niall saw a good number of fish (17) running through Ladykirk on Wednesday morning

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1” and the water temperature is 64.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest West Learmouth, Pedwell, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week, If the expected Rain comes Upper North Wark could be worth a look.

The forecast looks a bit better this week with some heavy rain forecast for Monday and Tuesday which could see a lift in the water levels.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or 12 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Editor  and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
