River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 29th July
The week signalled
the end of the summer lets, with the autumn let’s starting on Monday. The week
was a very unsettled one with the river rising and dropping and leaving us with
a fair bit of black water. Thursday was pretty much a wash out below Kelso due
to the colour from the Teviot. There was also a Seal spotted between Tillmouth
and Upper North Wark on Friday. 113 Salmon and 76 Sea Trout were reported for
the week.
Up to the
end of the Summer Lets the season so far total that I have managed to research
and browse online for is 2350 Salmon and 696 Sea Trout.
Above
Kelso there were 31 Salmon reported with the best of the catches made at Rutherford
6 & Lower Floors with 9 inc a good day on Saturday with 7.
Bemersyde
Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Very quiet!”
Upper and
Lower Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “Lightly fished this
week, 3 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout were landed. Good sport on light tackle with the
fish being a mixture of fresh and not so fresh”
Between
Kelso and Coldstream 43 Salmon and 14 Sea Trout were reported with catches
spread out over this area, with the some of the better catches been made on
Junction 12 Salmon & 19 Sea Trout, Hendersyde 5 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout, Birgham
Dub 4 and 3 Sea Trout, West Learmouth 8 Salmon and the Lees with 7 Salmon.
Hendersyde
Head Boatman Ketch reports “A harder week with a couple of lifts that unsettled
the fish. The rods had a bit of sport most days though. Landed 5 Salmon and 1
Sea Trout”
On Upper
North Wark, it was a week of what could’ve been! Quite a few offers but nothing
sticking until the end of the week when we landed 4 Sea Trout up to 6lbs, Mr
Stuart Norris was amongst the successful rods. Saw quite a few fish going
through the Snipe on Friday morning then there was a Seal in the Dub on Friday
afternoon.
Below Coldstream
27 Salmon and 10 Sea Trout were landed. The best of the fishing was had at
Tillmouth with 9 and 2 Sea Trout, while on Ladykirk 10 Salmon & 2 Sea Trout
were landed.
Milne
Graden 2nd Ghillie Mr James Armstrong reports “Great numbers of
fresh fish running past us. Most of the fish we have been catching have been
sea liced. John Jordan had a great few days landing 1 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout
inc one that weighed just over 9lbs. Cascades and Flamethrowers in size 10 and
12 have been doing the business for us”
Fishing
on Ladykirk, Mr Jonathan Lane landed a cracking 12lb fresh Salmon and a 6lb
Fresh Grilse, while using his favourite salmon fly the superb ½” Ghillie Fly
from Tay Salmon Fly tied on a copper tube.
Ladykirk
Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Another
good week for us with 12 fish (4 Salmon and 8 grilse) and 2 sea trout. With
river pretty high we are not seeing the fish, apart from those we catch”
Mr
Douglas Aitken fishing at Birgham Dub and Ladykirk reports “Birgham Dub has to be one of my favourite beats on Tweed it
has all that old world charm great boatmen and has not been over
commercialised. So a Monday after a little rise of water over the weekend had
me up bright and early and very excited about what the day held in store. My
very gracious host Mr Niall Morrison and I headed off upstream and before long
a 5 lbs Sea Trout was landed closely followed by a 9 1/2lbs Salmon. After
losing another salmon (pilot error by me) Lunch
followed then an afternoon of bright sun and an upstream wind made things a
little testing. We wandered back up to the top of the beat for the last hour
and just as I was about to call it a day my line tightened and not long after
my backing was rapidly disappearing downstream. 15 minutes later Mr Morrison
expertly netted a magnificent 17lbs summer salmon. Thank you Niall and thank
you Birgham Dub what a day. Wednesday at Ladykirk was odd no fish
showing till 12pm then they caught later in the afternoon seems like pods of
fish running through and it's right place right time. Will all the lifts of
water I don't think they are settled or is there a volume of fish building in
any of the lower beats yet?
On the
tributaries, the main beats on the Till had a quieter-week with 1 Salmon and 5
Sea Trout reported. Lower Tindal 1 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout, Redscar & Upper
Tindal 5 Sea Trout and Tiptoe with 2 Sea Trout.
Mr David
Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association reports” The water levels remained above summer level all week and
ran with a peaty tinge from the Blackadder resulting in some excellent fishing
even in the bright conditions. We had fish every day up to Friday with a total for the week of 7 Salmon and 5 Sea
Trout. Nice to see a few Grilse starting to appear in the lower beats”
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 10” and the water temperature is 58.
Looking
at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Lennel, Tillmouth
& Ladykirk beats should have a good
chance of some action this coming week.
The
forecast this coming week looks quite unsettled with plenty showery weather
forecast with a south westerly breeze.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s
you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Water
temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or
12, If you prefer tubes over dressed flies ¼” and ½” should be about right. Copper
Cascade, Cascader, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Editor Sunray
Shadow, Red Frances and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should
bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the
spinning front the 13cm Black/Gold Rapala Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the
water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or
ghillie
