River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8^th July

With the unsettled weather of the previous week behind us the river was settling down at the beginning of the week. Good fishing was hoped for and for once the fish obliged, with good catches made over the main river and the tributaries. 213 Salmon and 108 Sea Trout were reported for the week, making this the most productive week of the season so far.

Above Kelso there were 77 Salmon reported with good catches from Middle Pavilion 7, Lower Pavilion 5, Bemersyde 9 and 2 Sea Trout while on the Dryburgh beats 10 salmon and 6 Sea Trout were landed. The best fishing above Kelso was on the Floors beats with Upper landing 14 and Lower landing 22. Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine Restaurant in Kelso landed a superb 27lb fresh salmon from Lower Floors.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Some fresh salmon about this week, not seeing any old fish moving and no residents in the pools”

Between Kelso and Coldstream 98 Salmon and 47 Sea Trout were reported with catches spread out over this area, with the some of the better catches been made on the Junction 18 Salmon and 22 Sea Trout which included a superb day of sea trout fishing on Wednesday with 20 landed. Hendersyde 11 Salmon and 15 Sea Trout, Birgham Dub 8 and 5 Sea Trout & Lower Birgham with 7 and 3 Sea Trout.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A good week considering we lost a day mid-week. 11 Salmon and 14 Sea Trout. All the salmon were fresh and most of them were double figure fish. The Sea Trout were in great condition too, mostly 4-6lbs”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Most fish around 10lbs and liced, saw plenty fish swimming through”

In the Wark area there were fish caught most days with Upper North 4 and 1 Sea Trout, Lower North 11 and South with 3.

On Upper North Wark 4 were landed 2 on the Fly and 2 on the Spinner. Best fish was 13lbs for Mr Stuart Norris. Mr Mark Crowther landed a fine 10lb fish from the Snipe on Thursday.

West Learmouth had a decent week landed 14 fish while the Lees had 19.

Below Coldstream the water levels weren’t suitable for most of the beats, however 16 Salmon and 9 Sea Trout were landed. The best of the fishing was had at Tillmouth with 7 and 3 Sea Trout, Milne Graden with 4 and 2 Sea Trout with 2^nd Boatman Mr James Armstrong being amongst the successful anglers, while on Ladykirk 5 and 2 Sea Trout were landed.

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Mhatti Viethen reports “Tricky conditions for us as we struggled with too much dirty water, but what lacked in quantity certainly made up with quality of the fish. Monday the 2 day rods lost 1 each, Tuesday produced 3 in the afternoon, including an 18lb liced cock fish and a fresh 16lb cock fish to syndicate rods, Wednesday and Thursday was a washout again, and Friday with river coming into fishable height and colour again produced 14 & 15lb fresh fish for the same day rod, including 1 lost. Saturday, with river conditions at its best produced nothing, maybe it was a bit too bright”

 The week ended with the level at Sprouston 11” and the water temperature is 54.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Middle Pavilion, Dryburgh, West Learmouth and Ladykirk beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks fairly like we are going to start the week with some damper weather but other than that it looks pretty settled.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or 12, If you prefer tubes over dressed flies ¼” and ½” should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Editor Sunray Shadow, Red Frances and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie
