River Tweed River Report Week Ending 28th April

For the time of year and given reasonable water conditions catches remain on the low side, given the amount of rod effort. Fingers crossed the fish start to appear soon. Conditions last week weren’t too bad apart from a few little rises around 1 inch a few days.

Above Kelso is starting produce a few more fish with 20 reported. Middle Pavilion got off and running for the season with Mr Tim Briggs landed a nice fish on Friday from the Boat Sheil and followed this up with a 2^nd fish on Saturday again from the Boat Sheil. On Dryburgh Upper Mr Leigh Final landed 2 nice fish on Friday, weighing 9lb and 7lb both taken on a size 8 Cascade. The Floors beats picked away during the week and landed 8 fish.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 26 fish were reported with Hendersyde 5, Sprouston 8 having the best of the fishing. Mr Sandy Wilson landed a 9lber from the Junction and Mr Will Haggas had success fishing Hendersyde.

Below Coldstream 7 fish were reported, Tweedhill got off and running with 1 on Wednesday and followed that up with 2 on Thursday. Tillmouth also had 3 for the week. Hopefully be a few more around this week with the lower water levels starting to suit these beats.

60 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Sprouston Beat.

On Upper North Wark, a tough week with the water level now at 10 inches, good effort was made by the rods but no success was had. Seen some fish on Tuesday that were moving through.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Nothing to report for Whiteadder.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the West Learmouth beat, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Upper Dryburgh & Lower Dryburgh beats should have a chance of a springer this week. With the water levels dropping in below Coldstream is starting to produce some fish so the Ladykirk beat could be worth a cast.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday will start off dry and bright but will become rather cloudy with rain pushing in from the west later in the day. On Wednesday, early rain will clear eastwards to give way to a scattering of showers, some of which will be rather heavy, with a slight risk of thunder. Windy too. Mostly fine initially on Thursday but rain will push east later. Rather breezy.

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating or Intermediate lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Aluminium or Copper tubes around 1” should be the order of the day, some anglers may prefer a big dressed fly around a size 6 or 8. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Girnel Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp and Underghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.
