River Tweed River Report Week Ending 26th May 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 26th May

The week started off with a bit of cloud cover and a lot cooler temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, which seemed to help especially on Wednesday when 22 fish were landed. Most fish caught going by reports were nice sea liced fish so hopefully a few more starting to appear. There are whispers of a few more fish been landed by the nets in Berwick, could be a few fish starting to enter the system, but with this lower water they may hang around the tidal beats before pushing further up through the river.

Above Kelso 13 fish were reported, with Middle Mertoun having the best of the fishing landing 4 fish.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 33 fish were reported, The Lees with 9 and Birgham Dub with 7 had the best of the fishing. Mr Garrett Ruigrok from Dublin on his 1st visit to the Tweed landed a nice 8lb fish from Willies Hole on the Junction Beat, further success was had on the beat by Mr Willlie Old, Mr Peter Draper and Lachlan. On Lower Birgham Mr Hugh Anderson landed 2 nice fish on the fly, one from the Cauld Stream and the other from Belle Rock. On Cornhill Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso landed two Sea Liced fish.

Below Coldstream 23 fish were reported, Tweedhill had the best of the fishing with 8 fish landed, while on the Horncliffe bank 4 were landed and a few lost. Tillmouth also picked away landing 5 for the week.

75 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 14lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub Beat.

Tweedswood Head Ghillie Mr Kevin Patterson reports “27th May just a wee thought I’ve decided after being asked a lot of times by different bodies to help run and teach a course on salmon fishing and all that goes with it from day one you will learn everything that you would need to now and more on the three day course from casting wading health and safety on the river how rods work all the different styles of casting and most important have fun in Sept Monday 17th start. Sportfish have taken and paid for in advance the three days all you need to do is go to this link and book on there's only three spaces left i did it last year with them you will not be disappointed and to help out with anything you might not be sure of just ask me first I will answer any questions you may have its very good value for what you get and you will go home at the end really clued up on everything salmon fishing i can tell you very formal and with me on there you get one of the leading UK casting instructors plus the beat ghillie for the last 26 years so come on let’s see if we can make it as good as last year cheers Kevin here’s the link. Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Challenging week with the low water, bright sunshine and wind blowing upstream most days but did manage 3 fish, 1 with lice and a few others seen. Nice to see a few getting caught below Coldstream”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “We managed to land 2 fresh fish and had the chance of a few more. I know you can’t land them all but it can make all the difference between a good day and a very good day if you land them. Like the old saying goes it’s called fishing not catching”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “2 fresh fish, waited a long time for them, seen fish running aswell”

On Upper North Wark, No rods on last week. Just a wee reminder that our June fishing is priced at £25 per rod per day and that includes the services of a boatman. To book or enquire give Martin a call on 07825 334425.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A great week for our German guests with 9 landed and a few lost and other pulls. All on the fly with a posh tosh being the main one. We have been fishing floating lines with 5'0" clear intermediate tips and the fly size #10-#12. All the fish bar one were fresh and were spread round the beat”

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “8 lb liced Brownback on Tuesday for syndicate rod and 8lb liced Brownback on Wednesday for Ros, fishing with Dean. Well done!! Cracking springer of about 10lb lost on Friday and that was it for the week. Hopefully more to report next time

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “Horncliffe had a good week 4 fish landed and several others lost, even with very little angling pressure. This upstream wind and bright sunshine has made things difficult, but we're seeing fish in all three beats. If conditions improve we should pick up some more fish this week there's some availability towards the end of the week and the weather forecast is looking more favourable...we still have some syndicate places available and the evening sea trout fishing starts in a few weeks

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “No fish reported for BDAAWhiteadder this week and with water levels remaining low the prospects look poor for next week. Good to see more fish entering the Tweed system and a lift in water will see fish running the river”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3” and the water temperature is 56.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tweedhill, Horncliffe, Ladykirk and Pedwell beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday will start off overcast in some areas but the cloud should break up to leave a dry day with sunny spells. Wednesday will be largely dry but also be quite cloudy for a lot of the time. The best of the brightness will be later on. Thursday is expected to be fairly cloudy with showers developing; some of these could become heavy.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 8 to 10 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Stenton Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Underghillie and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
