River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th April 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th April

Well the last full week of April has passed with daily east winds again, but we’re used to them having them for what seems like half the season so far. Next week the wind finally looks like it is going to change direction and swing to the west. The fish that are been caught do seem to be mostly sea liced fish which is good to see but catches remain a bit thin on the ground for the time of year. Hopefully things will pick up in the next few weeks. There has been a small rise today (Sunday) maybe it will have stirred things up a wee bit.

As always this report wouldn’t be what it is without the Ghillies/Boatmen and Fishers who supply the great up to date information it is thanks to them that I have content so Thank you to you all. If you would like to contribute from your beat or a few words on your fishing trip on the Tweed please just drop me a line and I’m happy to include. *** please note 4 of the fish photos are from last week just been received this week by***

Above Kelso 7 fish were reported, 4 from the Mertoun beats, 2 from Upper Floors and 1 from Dryburgh Upper.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 33 fish were reported with The Lees 9 having the better of the fishing. Fishing at the Lees, Mr Duncan Brymer and Mr Colin Hamnett were amongst the successful rods on the beat. Fishing at Upper Hendersyde Mr James England landed a cracking sea liced 14lb fish on the fly. Hendersyde had a better day on Wednesday landed 4 fish.

Below Coldstream there were 17 reported. Milne Graden landed 2 with Boatman Kevin Wright picking away at them, he also had a superb 8lb sea liced sea trout. Ladykirk had a good week landing 5 springers. Mr Malcolm Taylor, Mr John McCann, Mr Oliver Falk and Mr Antoine Kopff had success on the beat while Mr Eric Bell landed the beats best fish so far this season with a lovely 16lber. Tillmouth landed 6 for the week with 5 of these been caught on Saturday.

On the River Till, I heard of 1 sea trout landed by Mr Lee Ross.

66 Salmon and 8 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught on the Ladykirk beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A great week at Lower Birgham considering the conditions. 6 fish landed for the week. Biggest being 15lb and covered in sea lice. We also saw quite a few fish running and lost others. Was hoping that some rain over the weekend would help us for the week ahead, but it didn’t arrive. The fish were caught on all sorts this week, small stuff, big stuff, tubes, Sunrays”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports "We got off to a good start with 5 springer’s by Wednesday night. Sadly it went downhill after that. We did have 3 or 4 offers the next few days but that's as close as they came. The arrival of the Osprey and the first swifts gave us something to look out for though and let's hope the few extra inches of water over the weekend brings some fish in."

On Upper North Wark, another tough week with mostly east winds blown up the river making casting tricky at best, made the most of the quieter days and got some strimming done.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “9 for the week and lost a few. All liced or lice just off. Fish coming to #8-#6 dressed flies, wee bottle tubes and also had a few splashes to a Collie dug. Floating lines with intermediate tips being used. Be good to see the back of that east wind this week”

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Day rod Oliver Falk caught the 1st springer this week on Monday, liced and 8 lb. On Wednesday syndicate rods John McCann and Malcolm Taylor did the trick again, catching 1 each, 8lb and 9lb, both liced. On Friday, syndicate rod Eric Bell got biggest Springer for us this season, 16lb. What a cracker, but unusual for us at this time of year, she was slightly coloured. Saturday finished off nicely with 6lb springer for day rod Antoine Kopff”
Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder continued to hold 6 inches above summer level during the week however bright sun made fishing a bit of a challenge and no fish were reported off the BDAA Beats.”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 5” and the water temperature is 52.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Rutherford, Milne Graden, Ladykirk and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, a mostly cloudy start on Monday with some patchy light rain and drizzle possible. It is then expected to become mainly dry and fine with spells of sunshine breaking through. Tuesday will be fine for a time with spells of sunshine before cloud cover increases from the west later on, bringing an increasing chance of rain. Cloudy at times on Tuesday night with showery rain. Wednesday will see occasional sunshine but with showers likely. Rather cool and breezy on Thursday with further scattered showers.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Monkey, Underghillie and Cascade are all capable to tempting that springer on half inch to inch or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Black and Gold Rapala, 18-20gm tobies should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
