River Tweed River Report Week Ending 1st June 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 1st June

A sad way to start the report this week with news that Tweed and Tay regular Mr Calum McCready sadly passed away doing what he loved. Thought and sympathies to his family at this time.

Catches remain quite consistent with another reasonable week with 100 salmon been reported, with a small lift on Friday stirring up the algae and slime and made fishing on Saturday a nightmare for catching slime near every single cast. The Tweed catchment seems to keep missing the rain that will give us a much needed rise to clean out the river, other rivers around all had a decent rise toward the end of last week where the lower tweed rose about 1ft in total. The small rise has made the river a very dark peaty colour this morning and I would expected a few fish will have moved around and maybe a few more entered the river. The numbers of Sea Trout caught last week were much improved and this lift should encourage a few more up the river system.

Above Kelso 25 fish were reported, with the Dryburgh Beats with 7 having the best of the fishing. On Middle Pavilion Mr Mike Gourlay had 1 on a Silver Stoat’s Tail and Mr Graham Thomas landed his 3rd of the season. On Lower Pavilion Mr Tony Bell landed a 7lb fish from Cowies.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 37 fish were reported with Junction 12 and Birgham Dub 7 having the best of the fishing. Fishing at the Lees Mr Norman Taylor landed a nice 7lb fish from the Cauldstream. On the Junction Mr Jonathan Hicks had a good week landed 6 fish to his own rod and Mr Creighton Harvey landed a fine 15lb fish from the Willow Hole on a plastic tube fly. Small Silver Stoat’s Tails were doing the damage on Sprouston for Mr Gary Turner, Mr Gary Tate and Mr Simon Barr with some lovely fish caught on the bottom beat.

Below Coldstream 35 fish were reported. Tillmouth had the best of the fishing landing fish every day on their way to 12 for the week. On Waltham and Dritness syndicate water Mr Ron Martin had a 9lb fish on Monday while on Friday new syndicate member Mr Mike Wood landed a fresh 10lber. Tweedhill had a better week landing 6. Fishing at Ladykirk Mr Bob Miller landed a fresh 12lb fish while at Horncliffe on Monday Mr Murdo Crosbie, Mr Craig Drever and Mr Malky Ross had success and lost a couple.

On the BDAA beat of the River Whiteadder Mr Callum Simpson and Mr Colin Tait landed nice fish on Monday. On Saturday fishing downstream of Allanton Bridge Mr Alan Taylor landed his first salmon weighing 18.5lbs.

On the River Till, a better week with 1 Salmon and 11 Sea Trout were reported, 1 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal, 3 Sea Trout on Lower Tindal and 2 Sea Trout on Tiptoe.

100 Salmon and 33 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the BDAA Whiteadder beat.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “Couple of fish for the week, one for Mr Mike Gourlay on Tuesday caught on a little silver stoat then a third of the season for Mr Graham Thomas, Rises at the end of the week were full of weed which pretty much ended things for us, hopefully most of it has run off for tomorrow!”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “We had to work quite hard for our reward of 3 springers this week. The slym getting worse and regularly having to clean the fly was a pain at times. Hopefully the wee lift we had at the end of the week will spread the fish out a bit and maybe bring a few sea trout in but to be honest a 5 foot flood would of been more welcome to give the river a good clean.

On Upper North Wark, the old fishing hut has now been removed, a few wee jobs to do now in preparation for the builders arriving to start the groundwork’s.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “BDAA Whiteadder had four fish for the week to 18.5 lb all from upper beats. Cracking fish today off beat 2 for Alan Taylor, first time fishing Whiteadder and first salmon. Recent high water will allow fresh fish into the river and with water level falling from a high of 11 inches the prospects are very good for the start of the week, weather permitting”

Hawick Angling Club reports “Acreknowe is fishing well. There are flies being seen on the water at last, although not in the numbers we would like. Lures and Buzzers are accounting for most of the fish, but dries are worth a cast especially when the wind drops. Black Hoppers are worth a try. The fish are in excellent condition especially the Blues, which fight above their weight. Williestruther is being lightly fished but some good catches are being made. Power bait is still taking the majority of fish. Barnes Loch is fishing well and dry fly is taking the bulk of the fish caught. There is not much action on the rivers which are at a very low level. The little rain we have had has not had any effect on the levels. Large numbers of salmon smolts have been seen gathering in the pools, an encouraging sign for the future. Let’s hope they can avoid the Goosanders. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 9” and the water temperature is 54.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Boleside, Middle Pavilion, Rutherford, Ladykirk, Pedwell and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, a reasonably bright day tomorrow with spells of sunshine but a few well-scattered showers as well. It will remain windy. Tuesday will be quite unsettled with showery rain, heavy and thundery in places. The night will see the rain clearing to leave it largely dry. Wednesday will see sunny spells but there will be a risk of some sharp showers by the afternoon. Thursday will remain generally cool and unsettled with showers or some longer outbreaks of rain.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow, Underghillie and Cascade are all capable to tempting that springer on half inch or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Carrot or Blue Rapala, 18-20gm tobies should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
