River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th July 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th July

A hot clammy week that went over 30 degrees on Thursday making just sitting watching the river a rather warm job. Given the conditions a decent week’s catch with some good encouragement on Saturday with some better catches been made in the bottom beats, hopefully these were nice fresh fish, at the time of writing I haven’t managed to get any more information. A nice wee rise on Saturday night into Sunday put the river over 2ft on the Sprouston Gauge so hopefully this should be a good week ahead.

Above Kelso 28 fish were reported, with Middle Mertoun 13 having the best of the fishing. Mr Paul Fosbury landed a nice wee fish on the Rapala on Dryburgh Upper.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 30 fish were reported with the fish scattered about a few beats.

Below Coldstream 37 fish were reported, with Tillmouth landed 6, Ladykirk 11, Horncliffe 6 and Tweedhill 7.

On the River Till, a lot quieter week probably due to the hot sunny weather but 2 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal and 1 Salmon at Tiptoe were reported.
107 Salmon and 75 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub beat.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “Very slow week ended with an absolute bang, Ian Morgan landing three sea trout and a salmon all on Saturday, Well done that man!

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Nothing happening on Whiteadder this week and no fish reported. Despite the heavy rain the river level remained around 4 inches till Saturday night, data collected 7.30 pm recorded 7 inches and rising so with more rain over Sunday the prospects could be good for the start of the week.

Hawick Angling Club reports “The weather has been very challenging over the past week. The extreme heat has resulted in the fish going deep and consequently being difficult to catch. However on Acreknowe, when fish have been rising dries and buzzers, in smaller sizes have proved to be the best bet. Yellow Owl and Daddies being successful. Yellow Dancer, Cats Whiskers are worth a try when there is no fish showing. The fish are in excellent condition with 3lb fish common. Power bait is still taking the majority of fish at Williestruther but more anglers are fishing Nymphs, Buzzers and Dries and taking some nice fish. Barnes Loch continues to fish well and Dries being the most successful method. There has been some very good rises in the evening. On the rivers the extra water should bring some sea-trout up and hopefully some grilse. Due to exceptional growth Acrenkowe and Williestruther have both been strimmed again which makes fishing a little easier. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 10” and the water temperature is 60.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Milne Graden and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, after a generally fine morning with sunny spells, there will be a growing threat of thundery showers pushing up from the south. A breezier day. Wednesday will start off mainly dry but it will become fairly unsettled with heavy showers and thunderstorms. There will be potential of torrential downpours, large hail and frequent lightning. Thursday will be another showery day with heavy showers or thunderstorms. On Friday, a scattering of showers are possible, but it should become drier and brighter later in day.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow, Ghillie and Cascader are all capable to tempting fish on half inch or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Carrot Rapala, 18-20gm tobies should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 20th July 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 20th July

A hot clammy week that with rather unpleasant humidity made for tricky fishing conditions. Early and Late fishing brought some results. Some much needed rain came and the river rose nearly 2ft on Monday so there should be fish on the move this week. Would expect a few sea trout to be caught in the early part of the week and some fresh salmon hopefully entering the river.

Above Kelso 19 fish were reported, with the Dryburgh Upper and Bemersyde Beats landing 4 each having the best of the fishing. Mr Gerard Knecht landed a fish on the Boat Pool on Dryburgh Upper on a Stoat’s Tail.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 12 fish were reported with the fish scattered about a few beats. Mr Lee Ross landed a lovely fresh grilse.

Below Coldstream 33 fish were reported, with Tillmouth landed 14 for the week, Milne Graden 6 and Ladykirk 7. At Waltham and Dritness Mr Jack Weightman landed a nice 8lb fish while on Thursday Mr Mike Wood landed 4 fish weighing 10lb, 10lb, 12lb and 20lb.

On the River Till, the catches slowed up this week with lower water levels but fish continue to be caught with 4 Salmon and 14 Sea Trout were reported, 1 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal, 1 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout on Flodden and  2 Sea Trout at Tiptoe.
73 Salmon and 56 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught on the Junction beats.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “One sea trout for the week, Caught by Miss Anne Woodcock on a small blue and black tube, Rising colouring water put an early end to fishing early on Saturday, a few pulls earlier on the week but nothing stuck.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Needed more water, let's hope it comes this next week. We managed 4 this week 1 old river fish and 3 fresh ones Fiona Brown had a spanker of 8lbs stripping a monkey fly in the boat pool not bad for the low water conditions. Very few rods fished last week, might have had more with extra effort back to cutting weed next week if it stays clear

On Upper North Wark, building works are continuing, fished 1 evening this week and Mr Stuart Norris landed a nice 7lb Sea Trout.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder dropped steadily to finish at 3 inches this morning.  No fish reported for the week and river in need of rain”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 1” and the water temperature is 60.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside, Milne Graden and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Overnight showers and thunderstorms may linger in places for a time in the morning, but should clear to leave it largely dry for much of the day, with some sunnier spells. Thursday should be largely dry and very warm, but there is an increasing likelihood of showers or perhaps a thunderstorm through the day. Friday looks to be cloudier and cooler with the chance of showers as low pressure approaches from the west. It looks like remaining unsettled on Saturday, with more showers possible.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 13th July 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 13th July

Sorry for the late report this week just getting over Englands World Cup win a Lords no nails left but what a game.
Not a huge amount to report this week with the water levels getting low and the weed and algae is starting to build again. We could really do with a good flood to give the river a much needed clean out. The weed seems to have caused quite a debate in some quarters this week with a few venting their opinions on how and when it should be cut.
The beats with no weed are the lucky ones, while other beats lose the ability to fish as is the density of the weed. Summer lets on the river are generally priced to reflect the reduced ghillie service as the boatmen get to take some holidays or get on with important beat maintenance (Grass /Weed Cutting etc).
This period is normally around a 6 weeks, and the experienced ghillies on the river recommended that the period for weedcutting is the last 2 weeks in July. However this window of opportunity is largely dependent on it being feasible to get into the river and cut these weeks. Water levels, weather forecasts and family holidays can all clash with this 2 week period, some beats need over 3 weeks to cut and that is with perfect conditions.

Unfortunately the beats in the immediate downstream vicinity are going to have cut weed floating through their pools. However this important job needs to be done and whilst there are those who would restrict the weed cuts to Sunday’s there simply aren’t enough Sunday’s in July to get the job done.

Weed cutting has been going on for years and will continue for years to come. Maybe beats who are concerned about weed interfering with their tenants fishing should consider not be letting the last 2 weeks of July, or should at least ensure that the paying rods have the opportunity to be informed of this potential inconvenience before they book their fishing. Weed cutting, strimming and bank maintenance is not going please everyone but on many beats this work is essential to the long term upkeep of the river.

Above Kelso 13 fish were reported, with the Mertoun Beats 5 having the best of the fishing.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 22 fish were reported with the fish scattered about a few beats. Mr Stewart Binns kept his recent catch stats up with another fine fish from Lower Birgham.

Below Coldstream 27 fish were reported, with Tillmouth landed 13 for the week and Tweedhill had 5. Mr Ron Martin fishing at Waltham and Dritness landed a lovely 10lber.

On the River Till, the catches slowed up this week with lower water levels but fish continue to be caught with 12 Sea Trout were reported, 10 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal and 2 Sea Trout on Flodden
72 Salmon and 42 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 12lb Salmon caught on the Tillmouth and Tweedhill beats.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “July is here and so is summer, 23 fish for the season so far certainly better than last year. All but 2 of the fish have been fresh with the biggest 17lbs out of Woodside. All we need now is lots of rain to see if the summer fish are about. With the nets being of it might help the catches. With the low water we would expect the lower beats to be getting fish at the moment but not much about looking at the catches. Thunder storms expected so we might get a flash flood soon. There are a lot more Sea Trout about this year, we are seeing a few in the evenings. Reports are they are further down the river but they will get to us. Let's hope so they are good sport on the small rod”

On Upper North Wark, building works are continuing, fished 1 evening this week and Mr Stuart Norris landed a nice 5lb Sea Trout.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Slow start to the week but the local rain over Thursday gave a temporary rise to just under a foot resulting in three fish for Friday up to 9 lb.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 60.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the River Till give it a try into the evening and you should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, it will be cloudier tomorrow with occasional showers developing. One or two of these could be heavy. There should be some brighter spells too though. Although Wednesday may start off dry, thickening cloud from the west will soon bring more general outbreaks of rain or showers later in the day. An unsettled night will follow, with rain and a few rumbles of thunder possible. Occasional sunny spells are likely on Thursday, but also some heavy showers and thunderstorms. Friday may become cloudier but with further showers.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
