River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 6th July
It’s starting to feel more like summer now with warm
days and the river level dropping to near summer level as everything starts to
dry up with the heat and the farmers pumping out millions of gallons onto the
tattie fields! We are now into the time of the season for weed cutting and lots
of strimming, so don’t be surprised to see weed and grass floating past you in
the next couple of weeks. It would appear by the catches that a few more fish
entered the river last week with an increased catch below Coldstream with
reports of nice fresh fish been caught. Sea Trout numbers tailed off a bit this
week with the hot weather and low clear water not ideal for catching them. Bit
of rain on the forecast this week hopefully get another wee lift to keep things
fresh and the river algae free!
On Friday the first reported Pink Salmon was caught
on Horncliffe. For

Above Kelso 27 fish were reported, with the Boleside
6 having the best of the fishing. Mr Scott Connelly returning to Boleside
picked up where he left off landed 2 nice fish. On a recent trip to Mertoun Mr
Nick Craigs and guests landed 4 salmon and 2 sea trout. Mr David Hamnett
fishing at Makerstoun landed 2 and lost a couple of others. Mr Paul Lynch had a
good day on Gledswood landing 3 salmon.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 19 fish were reported
with Birgham Dub 8 and Lower Birgham 6 having the best of the fishing. Fishing at the Lees Mr Ian Gregson landed a
sea liced 7lber from the Slap and Mr Graeme Whitty landed a 9lber from the
Cauldstream. Fishing at Lower Birgham Mr Lional Strub landed his first ever
salmon then followed that success up with his 2nd salmon. Well done
Sir. Mr Stewart Binns also had success.
Below Coldstream 28 fish were reported, which is
much better than recent weeks, hopefully more fresh fish entering the system.
Tillmouth landed 15 for the week and Milne Graden had 7.
On the River Till, fish continue to be caught with 2
Salmon and 23 Sea Trout were reported, 2 Salmon and 19 Sea Trout at Redscar and
Upper Tindal, 3 Sea Trout on Flodden and 1 Sea Trout on Tiptoe.
90 Salmon and 78 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught
on the Birgham Dub beat.
Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “Well
the spring has come to an end, a reasonable spring with 16 fish landed, Mr
Thomas leading the way so far this year with three fish landed! Hoping for a
decent summer and a back end would be nice too, a good start to the summer
yesterday with one landed for Mr Nick Bateman so July is off to a good start!
We still have rods available throughout July and August so please don’t
hesitate to get in touch! Tight lines everyone”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “The week
started with the water pretty low. Conditions were tough and struggled to see
fish let alone catch any. Then on Thursday our fortunes changed and we landed 2
fresh salmon and a 5lb fresh sea trout. Friday went very quiet and then on
Saturday we landed 2 fish, one either side of lunchtime. And then 2 later on
from the cauld and lost one. Well done Lionel Strub catching his first 2 ever
salmon. We ended the week on 6 salmon and a sea trout. Hopefully this bit of
rain that is due this week could freshen things up a bit and a small lift in
the river would be great.
On Upper North Wark, the wind made evening fishing a pain
this week, not much cope trying to cast the single hander through that wind.
Building works are continuing. Mr Stuart Norris landed a nice 5lb Sea Trout on
Saturday.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Nothing to
report from the Whiteadder. Water levels remain low and no fish reported caught
this week”
Hawick Angling Club reports “The weather has been kinder over
the past week resulting in some good catches. Acreknowe
has fished well with the bulk of fish taken on dry flies, and buzzer also
accounting for a good number of fish. Smaller
flies have been the most successful. Power bait is still taking the
majority of fish at Williestruther but more anglers are fishing Nymphs, Buzzers
and Dries and taking some nice fish. Barnes
Loch is fishing well and Dries continues to be the most successful method.
There has been some very good rises in the evening. On the rivers the level fell away very quickly and was
soon back to summer level. A Duckling was
seen to be entangled in some discarded nylon at Acreknowe. Can all anglers
please take care to cut up all nylon into small pieces and dispose of properly.

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1” and the water temperature is 58.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Rutherford,
Tillmouth and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Monday will be a largely dry day.
There will be some sunny spells in the morning, but it will become cloudier in
the afternoon. There will be the chance of light rain in the evening and
overnight. On Tuesday, persistent rain is looking likely to move in from
the west, some spells of which could be heavy. Perhaps some lingering rain for
a time on Wednesday, followed by some patchier rain and drier spells. As for
Thursday, scattered showers are expected, some of which could be on the heavy
and thundery side.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow,
Ghillie and Cascader are all capable to tempting fish on half inch or dressed
flies in size 10 and 12. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala, 18-20gm tobies
should bring results.
