River Tweed River Report Week Ending 3^rd August

A bit better week with a wee rise greeting the fishermen on Monday morning which dropped away before getting another wee bump in the levels on Wednesday. Heavy thundery showers working their way round the catchment landing in the right places now and again. A good rise this week and lots of colour coming down the Teviot should hopefully move some fish about.

Above Kelso 37 fish were reported, with the Floors Beats 10 having the best of the fishing.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 49 fish were reported with the fish scattered about a few beats with Birgham Dub 8, Lees 7 and Sprouston 6 having the best of the fishing. Fishing on Cornhill Mr Steven McGregor landed 2 fish for his day using a size 12 Orange Flamethrower. On West Newbigging Mr Ian White landed a grilse while on Upper North Wark Mr Richard Farr landed one in the Dub and Mr Neil Sillett at success in the Snipe.

Below Coldstream 53 fish were reported, with Tillmouth landed 25 and Ladykirk 11 having the best of the fishing. On Waltham and Dritness Mr Ian Webberburn landed a 5lb Grilse while on the same beat Mr Jack Weightman landed a 6lb Grilse.

On the River Till, catches remained on the quiet side but 3 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal and 2 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout at Tiptoe were reported.

163 Salmon and 71 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 17lb Salmon caught on the Ladykirk beat.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “Well, July started with a fish on the first, The month was tough with a sea trout landed on our traditional Ladies weekend by Miss Anne Woodcock on the 19th , This weekend also seen the seen the first of four three foot rises in less seven days, Mixed in among the hottest day of the year, Then Mr Ian Morgan came to fish on Saturday in a very slow rising start, Ian managed to land three sea trout and one salmon, Monday saw favourable conditions With overcast skies and peaty water three more fish landed including two for Mr Stephen Fielding who is continuing his good season and putting him in the lead for the top rod this season. Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Here we are at the end of July, it’s been a mixed month with the weather seeing water most weeks up to 2 ft 6 and it carried a lot of beer colour which should have been good for the sea trout. 3 where landed and a few lost but we expected a few more on the back of numbers reported down river. Fingers crossed we get a big late run. With the Salmon we ended up with 15 most of them fresh run. Fishing the Sunray did well for Fiona Brown, her first try she landed a 8lbs fresh fish out the Boat Pool and the same with William Stebbings a 5lbs fish! The others came on a variety of flies, Blue Gledswood and Silver Stoat doing well. The Stream and Boat Pool have fished well this month with Woodside keeping its end up! Some changes to the scenery at Woodside all the Softwoods are being taken out on the Ravenswood side, this might let the wind in on a bad day. I have been busy catching up with the weed cutting and strimming the banks. The water is dropping away of the gauge now so waiting for the next flood to bring some more fish in. Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “At lower birgham this week the little rises of water helped us with fresh fish running upto and through us. We started the week well with a salmon and 2 sea trout on the Monday, then on Tuesday even though the water was clearer touched nothing, but did see fish. Wednesday we had 2 fish, both fresh grilse and then quiet Thursday. Friday morning we landed 3 salmon (1 salmon and 2 grilse) and lost 2 others. Then with the sun and east wind on Saturday it went quiet again. But 6 salmon and 2 sea trout was a very good week. Hopefully some rain next week and more fish running. Fingers crossed”

On Upper North Wark, done a wee bit of fishing this week while working on the finishing touches for the new hut. We managed 2 fish for the week with Mr Richard Farr and Mr Neil Sillettt having success.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Despite some rain locally Whiteadder remained low and dropped to 2 inches on Saturday morning. No fish reported and rain desperately needed for Monday.”

Hawick Angling Club reports “The weather again has made for difficult fishing conditions. Acreknowe, has been hard going through the day, but has been fishing well most nights in the last hour of light. Very good hatches of Sedges have been happening just at darkening and the fish are rising freely. Power bait is still taking the majority of fish at Williestruther but more anglers are fishing Nymphs, Buzzers and Dries and taking some nice fish. Barnes Loch like, Acreknowe, is fishing best just before dark. Again sedges taking most fish. On the rivers the extra water has moved some fish. The odd salmon and sea-trout has been caught. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 5” and the water temperature is 64.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Milne Graden and Tillmouth beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, early cloud and rain will spread east and north tomorrow morning, leaving some sunny spells and a few lingering showers. In the afternoon showers will turn heavy and thundery in places. Low pressure will keep the middle of next week unsettled with plenty of showers and thunderstorms. Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to see showers throughout the day, with these turning heavy and thundery in the afternoon. By Thursday, as the low moves off to the east, thunderstorms are less likely but scattered showers are still expected at times.

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow, Ghillie and Cascader are all capable to tempting fish on half inch or dressed flies in size 10 and 12. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala, 18-20gm tobies should bring results.
