River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 7th September
The catches remain
quite consistent this week with some good days catches amongst some days when
you’re sitting looking at the water thinking why we aren’t catching. A small
lift came through on Wednesday evening which darkened the water to near black
coffee colour for Thursday. There still
seems to be a good mixture of fresher fish and river fish been reported. The
river is settling back in this week with the odd bit of rain about which may
help keep the levels up a bit, overall things are starting to cool down a bit
more with the temperature 6 degrees this morning while walking the dogs, this
should keep the river that bit cooler and hopefully start to see a few more
autumn fish appearing in the next few weeks.
There was a lovely
evening this week at Upper North Wark when Mrs Clare Haggas officially
opened the new hut on 6th September. Clare is a
well-known Sporting artist who specialises in creating large, dynamic
and powerful paintings of a variety of British Wildlife, and with her Husband
Will Haggas is a lifelong fisher and a regular Tweedside visitor. Local Piper
Mr Grant Munro greeted the invited guests before the evening’s reception that
was catered by the Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso who provided a wonder
buffet to compliment the champagne reception and Lynne Grant provided her
amazing photography skills to capture the moment
Above Kelso 143 fish were reported, with the
Dryburgh Beats 20, Middle Mertoun 22, Rutherford 31 and the Floors Beats with
23 having the best of the fishing. Middle Mertoun had a good start to the week
with Team V Fly hooking 15 and landed 12 on Monday. Rutherford continues to
produce the good this season with a good week of 31 fish landed. On Dryburgh
Upper Ghillie Brian Douglas had success on his Carat Fly while his partner
Vickie landed a couple of fish and a sea trout. On the same beat Mr Harry
Rogers had success. Fiona Brown continued to pick away at Bemersyde landing a
nice fish from the Woodside on a Cascade. Fishing at Upper North Wark after a
few lost fish at the start of the week father and son duo Keith and Jack
Triffitt managed 3 between them on Saturday with young Jack getting a nice
10lber from the Snipe after losing one earlier in the day not to be out done by
his son, Keith managed to landed 2 on the fly.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 110 fish were reported
with the fish scattered about a few beats with Birgham Dub 17 and the Lees 30 having
the best of the fishing. Fishing on the Lees Mr Toby Kemble landed a 10lb Sea
Trout and Mr Gene Godden landed a fine fish from the Learmouth Stream. Fishing
at the Junction 91 year old Wilf Harris landed a 10lber while younger brother
Frank who is 88 lost one at the start of the week.
Below Coldstream 52 fish were reported, with Tillmouth
14 and Ladykirk 14 having the best of the fishing.
On the River Till, a bit better this week with 2
Salmon and 3 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal, 4 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout at
Lower Tindal and 2 Salmon at Tiptoe were reported.
367 Salmon and 57 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught
on the Birgham Dub beat.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A steady
week on lower birgham this week. See a lot of fish in the first 3 days. Then as
the week went on and when that water came, it moved a lot of fish on. But with
7 salmon ranging from 3-15lb and a very fresh 6lb sea trout, it was another
good week. 2 people with their first ever fish’s, and our 100th salmon of the
year. Hopefully things settle this week and some fish come on the take and move
upriver. Tight lines tom.”
On Upper North Wark, a very emotional week to say the
least! 4 fish lost then 3 landed on Saturday. Highlight of the week was the
grand opening of our new fishing hut which was a lovely evening with great
company.
Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports
“WINDY! Good enough week with 30 fish landed the
best being a 20lb fresh hen from the Temple, the lucky rod being Gene Godden,
in fact Gene caught the lions share. Toby Kemble had a 10lb sea trout which
lead him a merry dance in the cauld. The wind was an absolute bugger but the

Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder
remains low at 6 inches and nothing to report this week. Provisional fish
counter results look very promising so far this season”
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft and the water temperature is 56.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Bemersyde,
Rutherford and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week. If
you fancy testing out the new fishing hut at Upper North Wark there is some
availability mid-week.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will stay largely cloudy
and damp with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle. However, the rain will
tend to die away by the evening, leaving drier conditions overnight. After a
bright start in places, Tuesday will become cloudy and windy with rain arriving
from the west later on. A wet and windy night to follow on Tuesday night.
Wednesday then looks set to stay rather windy and showery but with sunshine at
times. A risk of further wet and windy weather on Thursday as the remnants of
Tropical Storm Gabrielle move through.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Willie Gunn
Snaelda, Rogie and Red Frances are all capable to tempting fish on ¾” - 1”
tubed or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala,
20-28gm tobies and Black Flying C should bring results.
