Willie Gunn Franc N Snaelda Step By Step Fly Tying Instruction By Tay Salmon Fly

I often get requested to show how to make certain patterns and I always try when time allows to help fellow tyers when I can. So here is my step by stem on how to make a Willie Gunn Franc N Snaelda.

Materials List

14mm Signature Tube
Black Bucktail
Orange Bucktail
Yellow Bucktail
Gold Mirco Krystal Flash
Yellow Feelers
Orange Feelers
Gold Oval Tinsel
Black Wool
Yellow Cock Hackle Feather
Orange Hen Hackle Feather
Black Hen Hackle Feather
Black Thread
1.8mm Inner Tubing
Red Cone Large

14mm Signature Tube with Silicone Hook Holder Tubing attached. Since I am using the pin to tie on the silicone tubing does help stop the worst of the tube spinning.
Catch in your thread to the rear of the tube.
Mix the Black, Orange and Yellow bucktail in even thirds to create the Willie Gunn mix for the tail. Tie in the bucktail making sure you wrap it all the way around the tube creating a skirt.
Trim the waste bucktail to the front off and then tie in 3 stands of Gold Micro Krystal Flash on the top and bottom.
Tie in four Feelers in even intervals on top of the skirt, making sure they curl out and away from the fly. I like to use two orange and two yellow for this patterns but the choice is really yours. Once the Feelers are secure build up your thread to create the carrot like body shape.
Catch in the end of the Gold Oval Tinsel.
Catch in the Black Wool.
At this stage I always varnish/glue the body before wynding on the wool. This helps with the longevity of the fly and stops the wool from slipping.
Wynd on the wool keeping the carrot shape as you work your way forward.
Wynd on the Gold Oval Rib.
Tie in the Yellow Hackle.
Tie in the Orange Hackle.
Tie in the Black Hackle.
Pull the feelers through your fingers and trim them to remove the feathered ends. This will make them all the same length.
Varnish the head of the fly.
