River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 8th February (Inc Opening Day)
As the first full week
of the season came to an end we were greeted by Storm Ciara and she did not
hold back! At the time of writing the water level at Sprouston is 12ft 8” and
still rising with reports of damage to buildings in the Hawick area and massive
flooding all around.
Opening Day we were
greeted by south westerly gales which made fishing and rowing a bit of a
challenge after the winter break. Mr Herbert Hinterberger landed the first fish
of the season from Lower Floors and with this fish Herbert won the Tweed
Trophy. Two other fish were reported on Opening Day, Mr Ian Hayward landed an
11lb fish at the Junction and Mr Jim Reid landed one on Birgham Dub.
More wind greeted us at
the start of the week but that tailed off and conditions got better at the week
went on and a few fish were caught. Mr Colin Chisholm fishing at Rutherford had
a 10lber on a Black and Yellow Snaelda. Magnus from Sweden had success on Upper
Floors. On the Junction fishing with Boatman Gavin Brown, Mr Andy Kress landed
a superb 17lb springer on his 13ft rod. On Upper Hendersyde there was a 7lber
for Mr David Jones and Mr Iain Wilson from the Borders Gunroom landed a superb
15lber from the Mill Stream. On Upper North Wark Mr Mike Graham landed the
beats first fish on the season for the second season running with a cracking
12lb fish taken on a 2” Black and Yellow.
As I say often this
report wouldn’t be what it is without the valuable contribution for ghillies and
fishers alike and I look forward in due course in getting regular updates from
Pedwell, West Newbiggin Syndicate and Middle Ettrick.
Pedwell have been busy
preparing for the 2020 season with the building
of a new fishing hut situated below Norham Castle overlooking the Tweed at the
bottom of our beat. I believe this is the first time the beat has had a
fishing hut, which shows great commitment from the beat owner to increase the
facilities for their rods.
Above Kelso 4 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 9 were reported and below Coldstream none were reported.
On the River Till, no fish were reported.
9 Salmon were landed for the week with the best fish 15lb Salmon
caught on the Upper Hendersyde beat.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “First full
week back in the river for 2020. Glad to be getting back into the swing of
fishing and trying to get that sometimes very illusive springer. Whilst trying
hard unfortunately we were only rewarded with last year’s models. But every
time the reel went there was always a hope and optimism that it could be the
real deal! There were a few fresh fish caught on the river which let you always
think you were in with a chance. Well done to those successful anglers who did
manage to find one! After the rain and massive flood this weekend. Next week
could be spent raking the banks up more that rowing a boat.... but we will see.

On Upper North Wark, First fish of the season was landed
by Mr Mike Graham from the Back of the Isle on a 2” Black and Yellow. Mr Hugh
Newton had hold of a fish on Thursday but it didn’t make it to the net unfortunately.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “The
Berwick & District Angling Association held their 2019 AGM on the 8th January
at the Black & Gold Club. Secretary/Treasurer Dave Cowan advised the
meeting that the BDAA beats had returned 72 salmon and 14 Sea Trout which was
well above average and the best catch record since 2012. Permit sales were well
up especially visiting day tickets which had increased by over 30%. Total
income from permit sales amounted to over £14,000 but despite that the
Association made a loss of over £900 for the season. There was plenty
availability for the coming year and anyone interested should contact the
Secretary either via the web page www.whiteadder.co.uk or
the BDAA Facebook page BDAA Whiteadder. The 2020 permit prices were held yet
again and the £160 for a full season salmon permit still attracted a £20
discount if bought before the start of the trout season on 15th March.
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom
in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from
the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 12ft 8” and rising with the water temperature
is 38.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper,
Rutherford, Upper Hendersyde and Lower Birgham beats should have a chance of
some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Monday will be a cold and
windy day with lots of showers. Some will be heavy and prolonged with hail and
thunder, and they will be wintry on high ground and at some lower levels at
times too. Tuesday will be cold and very windy with showers. These will
be wintry on high ground and at some lower levels at times too. On Wednesday,
the wind will start to moderate and there should be fewer showers later in the
day. On Thursday a new area of low pressure is expected to move in, bringing
the chance of rain, as well as further wintry precipitation, mostly on high
ground.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are looking grim for the
start of the week if not in the pub sinking lines with assorted poly leaders
should suffice on most places with Black and Yellow, Junction Shrimp, Temple
Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, and Rogie are all capable to tempting fish on 1.5”
– 2” tubes. Spinning starts on Saturday 15th February.
