River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th June 2020 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th June

The weather this week was a very mixed bag with temperatures reaching 28-30 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday with biblical thundery showers around the other days given the first semi reasonable rise for a good few months which moved some fish up the system but with the rise been very dirty and dropped back to near summer level the following day it would seem the bulk of the fish have stayed in the lower river going by the catches. As I write today the river is on the rise again with the overnight thunder plouts and very windy which looks like staying with us for the next few days. Once this weather settles down could be interesting to see what is caught and where they are caught.

On Dryburgh Upper 3 salmon and 3 sea trout were landed for the week, with Mr Cuthbert been amongst the successful rods landing a fine fresh fish. Mr Alex Barclay landed 2 nice fish in the Stream at Bemersyde on an inch and a half Thunder and Lightning Tube. Coincidently given the name of the fly Alex landed both these fish just after a thunder storm had pasted over! He also lost a fish in the Woodside earlier in the day. Mr Ian Bennet kept up his landing salmon in the dark recently with another fine fish from Gledswood, He also had success on the fly at Drygrange on the rising water on Tuesday. Mr Iain Wilson from the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells landed a beautiful fresh fish from Mertoun.

Above Kelso 30 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 75 were reported and below Coldstream 81 were reported. With the best fishing been at Ladykirk where 17 were landed. Hendersyde 16 and Birgham Dub 15 also had reasonable catches for the week.

Waltham and Dritness Beat, A rise of around 2 feet moved a lot of fish this week, not enough water to clean the river though, a lot of algae still around. On Wednesday we reached our 100 th salmon, quite a milestone these days. This week we caught seven salmon, lucky rods were, Mike Wood 3 (three fish), Dave Lorimer 2, Ron Martin 1 and Jack Weightman 1.

186 Salmon and 47 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 17lb Salmon caught on the Horncliffe beat.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Started the week with a fish on Monday and seen a few on the fin coloured on Tuesday Wednesday with the rain over night we had a number of older fish arrive on the beat Thursday but no takers lost a fish Friday morning 2 very fresh fish in the afternoon after the thunder storm water dropped all week and by sat was down to 4 inch 1 older fish on Sat also lost 2 more. We are being lightly fished no rods coming from over the border until the restrictions are lifted Still looking for a good clean out of the river

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well this week was strange really, we got some water, got some over cast conditions and got some fish. But most of the action was at the beginning of the week when the water was rising or higher... overhead conditions was blistering sunshine and hot. Then the weather and fortunes changed and left us wishing that we kept those hot clear days. We did make contact with a few fish in the latter part of the week but they weren’t destined to be landed. Maybe the rise took some of our fish upstream, Maybe it was the changing pressure with 2 stormy days, maybe it was ‘just one of those things..... ‘. But a bit of action and some nice fish landed. Looking at the week ahead the weather looks a little unsettled and windy so who knows how much rain we will have and where it will hit. Fingers crossed it passes over quickly and a more consistent pressure system moves in. We do have some availability this week on a couple of days and in the weeks ahead and could well be worth a go. Like always, tight lines, stay safe and be sensible. Tom.

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.

Berwick and District Angling Association reports “While the Tweed enjoyed a decent, much needed spate this week the Whiteadder catchment still has a magical umbrella over it, remaining stubbornly low. With the caulds on the river holding back migratory fish we continue to hope for a good spate to facilitate the passage of our summer salmon and sea trout. We can but hope that something is done soon to improve this situation by opening up the caulds to improve passage to the upper river where there are some excellent spawning grounds with rooms to spare. On a brighter note though there have been reports of some good grayling in the Lower River and catches of brown trout to 1.5lbs on the nymph and dry fly, which is great news. The BBC weather 14 day forecast says we are heading for a period of rain over the next week, some of it quite heavy. Let’s hope it falls on the Whiteadder catchment too.

Hawick Angling Club reports “The Club have extended their sales of Salmon Permits for the season until the end of July. With the right water height salmon will be caught from now on and the Teviot gets a good run of Sea Trout. Permits are priced at £150 for visitors and £80 for local residents. Anyone interested can email the club Secretary Drew Dickson on drewdickson@talktalk.net”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 10” and the water temperature is 68.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Bemersyde, Hendersyde and Lower Birgham Beat’s should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Wet and grey tomorrow with a moderate breeze, but it should feel slightly warmer. Some heavy bursts of rain will ease through the day to leave just some patchy light rain or drizzle later. Tuesday will be warmer with scattered showers easing throughout the day, leaving just some patchy light rain or drizzle towards the evening, followed by clear spells overnight. Winds easing too. Wednesday and Thursday will see a mixture of variable cloud, some hazy sunshine, and showery outbreaks in places.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are a bit more unsettled with thundery downpours lifting the levels regularly. I would suggest a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Aurora Cascade, Gledswood Shrimp, Copper Cascade, Ghillie and Underghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 8-12 dressed hooks. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go, if a bit of colour appears get the Rapala on.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
