River Tweed River Report Week Ending 30th May 2020 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 30th May

As we entered the last week of May on this very unusual season so far, Nicola Sturgeon announced on Thursday that fishing could resume in Scotland using common sense for travelling so from the Friday the beats on the Scottish part of the Tweed could start fishing again. Optimism of what fish may be lying where in the pools awaiting their fish sight of a fly/spinner for the best part of 10 weeks anticipation was high, but as fate would have it the country was baking under 25-30 degree sunshine, river at summer level and the water temperature into the 70’s doesn’t make for good fishing conditions at the best of times.

Above Kelso 8 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 49 were reported and below Coldstream 73 were reported. With the best fishing been at Tillmouth where 21 were landed giving them 85 Salmon landed for the month of May. Waltham and Dritness with 53 for the month and Horncliffe 50 have had a great time of it since reopening.

Fishing at Makerstoun Mr Iain Wilson from the Borders Gun Room in St Boswells braved the heat as was rewarded with a nice fish along with Mr Neil Jones who caught straight away in the morning. On Sprouston Simon Barr and guest had a good couple of days landing 9 fish for the 2 days. Simon’s wife Selena landing her first fly caught salmon on Friday and swiftly followed that up with her second on Saturday. Mr Sean McGarry fishing at West Learmouth on Saturday landed a lovely 8lber on a Tay Salmon Fly size 14 Ghillie Fly. Fishing at Tillmouth Mr Marc Wrigglesworth had a good day landing 4 on Monday while Mr Colin Mathieson fishing a Sunray Shadow landed a nice fish on the same beat. Fishing Horncliffe on Monday Mr Richard Waite landed 3 fish on a Tay Salmon Fly German Snaelda and lost a good fish that he didn’t get a glimpse at.
Waltham and Dritness Beat had another good week of low water heights, which suits the beat and plenty of fish in the river, most rods who fished managed to hook or catch a fish. 14 salmon were landed, lucky rods were, Mike Wood 6 (six fish), Ron Martin 3, Dave Lorimer 2, Jack Weightman 2 and Tony Wood 1.

On the River Till, no fish were reported.
131 Salmon and 11 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 15lb Salmon caught on the Tillmouth beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well our second post lockdown week on the river. It was expected to be announced on Thursday that the Scottish side of the river was going to open and the whole tweed system could once again be united and fished as one. And it did from the Friday. Much was expected of catches? Numbers? Big fish? Where was the early run sitting? Who was going to get a bonanza? Or in fact who was going to get anything? But there were catch’s seen all along the river on what was a terrible fishing day. It was hot, sunny, water temp high and you only wondered what could have been caught if there was cloud cover.... cool water and air temperatures. There were the obvious places where fish were held up and sat, but was good to see some more fish landed throughout the system. We struggled a little this week. We had 3 salmon and a sea trout. Most of the action was in the earlier part of the week when the water was a little higher and fishing days were a bit better. We saw a lot of fish even in the low water on Thursday running, but unfortunately couldn’t tempt them to have a go at out flies. Looking to next week we have the promise of a bit of rain midweek maybe.... who knows? But hope some comes in to freshen things up again. And probably early morning and late evening would be the times to try and get hold of one of those fish before it gets too bright and hot. We have some availability next week and if local could be well worth an early morning and then coming back in the evening as there are a few sea trout starting to show in the river. As always tight lines, stay safe and fingers crossed for some rain. Tom

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.
Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “50 fish landed for the month of May Mr Gary Topham of Seahouses caught the 50th fish and was presented with a bottle of flavoured Pilgrim gin, kindly donated be R. G. Foreman & son butchers of Norham. Catches have slowed down this week as the water temp has been rising, hopefully next week the weather will cool down”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 0” and falling with the water temperature is 70.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Junction, Sprouston, Lower Birgham, Pedwell and Tweedhill beat’s should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will be dry and fine with of lots of sunshine, although fair-weather cloud may develop in the middle of the day. Remaining rather warm despite moderate north-easterly winds. Tuesday will see a change in the weather pattern. Showery rain will push in from the north-west. Some of these could be heavy. It will feel cooler than recently with brisk northerly winds. Wednesday will be rather windy with fresh north-easterly winds, bringing scattered showers at times. Feeling noticeably cooler. Thursday will be breezy, cool and showery with lots of cloud.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Aurora Cascade, Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor and Ghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 10-14 dressed hooks. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
