River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 6th June
With the first full
week of June past and the hot sunny weather behind us for the moment the
overhead conditions were pretty good for fishing this week with dull, overcast
days with some rain giving small rises which cooled the water temperature down
from the silly 73 degrees back into the late 50’s early 60 degrees which is
much better for the fish. On Wednesday there was a freshet released from Talla,
Fruid and St Mary’s Loch which also game a welcome bump in the levels, not a
huge amount by any means with from below summer level any lift is gratefully
received.
For the time of year
there does seem to be a good head of fish in the system with many caught this
week carrying sea lice or very fresh which is a very good sign that these fish
have not long entered the system rather than been due to the river been closed.
I did hear an interesting theory the other day that with the fishing boats in
the sea been grounded due to the Covid 19 restrictions maybe there are not as
many fish been taken at sea by the trawlers and fishing vessels. Interesting
thought or just that there are a lot more fish around at the moment? Whatever
the reasons there is definitely a feel good factor back on the river at the
moment and people fishing with confidence. Long may it continue.
Above Kelso 91 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 122 were reported and below Coldstream 143 were reported. With the
best fishing been at Middle Mertoun where 31 were landed. Ladykirk 30, Tweedhill
27, Hendersyde 25 and Rutherford 22 also had decent catches for the week.
Fishing at Boleside on
Monday 5 fish were landed with Mr Lee Conway 3, Mr Scott Connelly 1 and Mr
Kevin O’hara 1 getting them. Middle Pavilion got off and running for the season
on Friday when Mrs Susan Bourne landed 2 salmon, the beat also had 3 sea trout
on Thursday. Mr Larry Thomson fishing at Lower Pavilion landed 2 fish, 1 from
Cowies and the other from below the Cauld. Bemersyde had 5 for the week with Mr
Nick Green landed a fish in the Boat Pool The Stream produced the next 4 salmon
with Fiona Brown landing an 8lb fish on a Dee Monkey fish off a 5ft
Intermediate Tip, New syndicate member Mr Colin Halliday fishing a 10ft type 3
tip of a Floating line with an Orange tube fly landed a nice fish. These were
followed by a 7lber taken on a Monkey fly and a 6lber taken on a Full Floating
line. Fishing at Dryburgh Upper on Saturday Mr Al Meek had a good day landing 3
Salmon on the same beat Mr Mark Moorman landed the beats first of the season
using a Danish fly fished from a cane rod. Gledswood had 3 for the week
including 1 for Mr Ian Bennet. Mr Nigel Holdsworth landed 5 on Mertoun. Rutherford
had a good week landing 22 fish with a mixture of fresh fish and older river
fish with Mr Martin Ritchie, Mr Richard Farr and Mr Stuart Norris who landed 2
on Saturday been amongst the successful rods on the beat. Mr Iain Wilson from
the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells landed a nice fish at Lower Makerstoun on
Friday. Mr Chris Cotton fresh from collecting his new Loop rod from Eoin
Fairgrieve on route to the Junction Beat landed 2 lovely fresh fish. What a way
to christen a new rod well done. Also on the Junction Mr John Taylor picked
away over the week. Fishing at the Lees on Saturday Mr Sean McGarry landed 3
beautiful fresh fish and lost a few others, on the same day Mr Alex Frere-Scott
landed an 8lb fish on a Gledswood Variant. On the same beat Mr Graeme Leckie
landed 2 and also landed another 2 on his trip to Tweedhill. Mr Kevin McGee had
2 for his trips to the Lees and Milne Graden landing fish of 11lb and 6lb. Mr
Nick Craigs fishing at Ladykirk landed 5 salmon in the same day all on the fly.
On Tweedhill Mr John Marshall landed a good fish on a Tay Salmon Fly Park
Shrimp while Mr Richard Waite landed another good fish to keep his recent
successes going with one of his firm favourite flies from Tay Salmon Fly the
German Snaelda doing the business.
Waltham and Dritness
Beat had another good week of low water heights,
which suits the beat and plenty of fish in the river, most rods who fished managed
to hook or catch a fish. 20 salmon were landed, lucky rods were, Jack Weightman
6 (six fish), Mike Wood 3, Ron Martin 2, Dave Lorimer 2, Frank Bell 2, Billy
Robson 2, Martin Inkster 2 and Tony Wood 1.
Not sure which beat but
Mr Lewis Tatterstall had success using a Wye Thunder Fly
Mr Douglas Aitken reports “Team V Fly back on Tweed
for the first time this year. It was a great opportunity to test our new reels
and the fishing gods were very kind to us. The star of the show was undoubtedly
young Tom (14) who after 6 years of hard work and dedication put all he has
learned in to practice and read the conditions and river perfectly to catch
some fabulous fish. We had a mix of older fish clean spring fish and very fresh
summer fish from 6 to 15lbs fishing floating lines with tips and 10 to 14
doubles or very small tubes. We are happy to report that Tweed is alive and
well and once again offering world class sport”
On the River Till, no fish were reported.
356 Salmon and 18 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 18lb Salmon
caught on the Horncliffe beat.
Tweedswood Head Ghillie Mr Kevin
Patterson reports “1st June with new owners taking over and the fishing slowly
getting going it’s good to at least have a cast in the pools water height is
low and we seem to be back chasing a few older river fish around the pools. Trout
are very evident again and are giving some good fun at least and Lewis had a
huge grayling so give a bit extra water and we might get going in coming weeks.
The new
owners are very keen fly anglers and have decided on FLY only fishing at
Tweedswood this will give a mile of dedicated fly fishing water to any one that
keen on getting going with the fly rod . We are keen to get the casting tuition
going as well iam ok with one to one tuition over the coming weeks and have got
the situation sorted so if any ones wanting tuition we can sort that out as

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Mr Steven Charlton reports “We finally got off the mark, with two fish for Mrs
Susan Bourne, who was enjoying her first day on the beat, and on the tweed!
Well done Susan! We do have availability going forward, All we ask is please be
sensible in where you are travelling from, due to covid rulings we still have
no access to the hut boat or toilet,”
Lower
Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well the end of another week. One
with more cloudy skies, rain forecast and high hopes that the favourable
fishing conditions would result in an increase in catches. And looking at the
end of weeks catch figures we all clearly benefitted from the slight rise in
water and cloudy fishy conditions. We landed 4 salmon and a sea trout for the
week. Again all the fish were fresh run in and looking fin perfect. We made
plenty more contacts with fish sometimes for seconds sometimes for abit
longer..... But in the end they were not destined to be landed as they parted
ways. Frustrating as always but at least they were on and when you have seen
the quality of the fish so far this year it makes you all the more eager to get
back in there and hope for a second chance. Throughout the river beats all up
and down have been having more success this week which has been nice to see and
has created a ‘buzz’ around the fishing again and for the people local or a
drive able distance away what a great opportunity it has been for them to get
back on the river. As we have been the last few weeks we are operating in
accordance to guidelines set out to try and keep the visiting angler and us
safe. Keeping our distance, no huts/ facilities and no boating. This has felt a
little strange and I am really pleased that everyone has respected this and has
continued to keep all our safety paramount whilst taking to chance to fish.
Looking to the next week we are champing at the bit to get back on the water
and see where the next pulse of fish is? And is it going to be with us? Reports
from down river is that plenty of fish have been running the system. We have
some availability this week and 3 days available next week. Stay safe, be
sensible and tight lines. Tom”
On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.
The Lees beat reports “A good day yesterday with 7 landed and
as many lost/pulls, all 7 were fresh fat fish, all on the fly with #10 being
the right size. Great to see so many fresh fish at this height of water. Lower
water temps helped”
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 4” and the water temperature is 58.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper,
Hendersyde, Lower Birgham and West Learmouth beats should have a chance of some
action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will see variable cloud
through the day with the odd bright and sunny spell. Winds staying quite breezy
in places with temperatures remaining cool for this time of year. Early
bright spells on Tuesday but a front will sweep through later in the day,
bringing outbreaks of rain. This front should clear to the southeast overnight.
Wednesday will start to see some quite changeable weather occur. Most likely it
will stay rather cloudy with some sharp showers, some quite heavy at times.
Thursday will see variable cloud and bright spells.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer
level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most
beats with Aurora Cascade, Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor and Ghillie
Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 10-14 dressed hooks. Great time
of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the
flying c and toby should be worth a go.
