River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27^th March

 

A week of reasonable water level albeit with a stiff cold south westerly most days, I would have to report that the catches were quite disappointing given the levels. Can be due to a lack of fishers on the beats with the current restrictions or just a lack of fish entering the river so far this season, tie will tell over the next few weeks.  

 

Wednesday saw the first reported fish caught below Coldstream with Milne Graden landing a nice fish. Tweedhill and Horncliffe got off the mark for the season to. Fishing at Waltham and Dritness Mr Jim McAdam celebrated his 80^th Birthday in style landed a 9lb Springer on the fly. Mr Callum Simpson landed a cracking fresh fish from Tweedhill on the ever popular Editor Sunray Shadow from Tay Salmon Fly, this was the first fish of the beat this season.

 

Above Kelso 14 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 18 were reported and below Coldstream 4 were reported. With the best fishing being on the Junction beat where 7 springers were landed.

23 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 18lb Salmon caught on the Horncliffe beat.

On Upper North Wark, The beat is currently closed to the public until there is a change in the restrictions. A week of losing fish for us on the days we gave it a go, lost 3. Any enquiries or booking requests please call Martin on 07825334427.

 

 

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr Lee Ross reports “Good start to the week even with low water and bright conditions a 7lb springer was landed at Clarabad on the Monday and on the Tuesday an 8lb licer from the same pool, with the water fluctuating from 10 inches down to 9 then finishing the week at 11 inches with cold south west winds hammering the water slowing things down for the rest of the week, ideally we would like another foot of water in but looks to be another week of low water and high winds”

 

 

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

 

 

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 4ft 5” and the water temperature is 46.

 

 

At this stage in the report I would normally have my suggested beats to book for the week ahead, however with all the Covid Restrictions in place and each beat using their own guidelines I will refrain from suggestions until the river is opened back up for fishing a bit more normally.

 

 

The forecast this coming week, Remaining cloudy tomorrow, with a few patches of light rain or drizzle around in the morning, but drier in the afternoon. It will be very mild but with brisk south-westerly winds persisting. High pressure will move in on Tuesday, bringing a warm day with plenty of sunshine and only gentle winds. Wednesday is expected to become cloudier and cooler from the north with a chance of patchy rain. Thursday is expected to turn drier once more, with patchy cloud and some sunny spells throughout the day.

Look at what to bring for the week ahead, looking at the weather for this coming week the water levels are always rising at the time of writing so likely to be flooded off early part of the week or spinning at best, once it settles an intermediate line or Wet Cel 2 with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats. Black & Yellow, Tosh, Willie Gunn, Monkey and Posh Tosh are all capable to tempting fish on 1” -1½” tubes, could be worth given a dressed fly a go in a size 6. On the spinning front Rapala and 28gm Toby should bring results.
