River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th April 2021 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th April

Another pretty disappointing week of catches with sunny overhead conditions with a very cold northerly wind, which resulted in some snow flurries mostly towards the end of the week. Water levels are dropping in towards summer levels and with no real sign of rain coming for the next week or two there is only a chance of a wee snow melt lift but nothing major. I did notice that the Tay’s catch has picked up in the last week, hopefully this means there are some fish on their way down the coast heading for the Tweed.

Dryburgh Upper got off the mark for the season with a 6lb fish carrying sea lice got by ghillie Mr Brian Douglas on the fly. On Bemersyde Mr Bill De La Hay landed the biggest fish of the week of the river with a 16lb fish caught on a Gold Bodied Willie Gunn. Fishing at Boleside Mr Doug Unkels landed a nice fish on the fly. Rutherford picked away during the week with Mr James Henderson having success on the fly in the Dub while Mr Dave Walker had success in the Slap landing a 6lber. Fishing on the BDAA stretch of the Whiteadder Mr Ian Hunter landed a stunning 11lb springer from Clarabad.

Above Kelso 15 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 14 were reported and below Coldstream 4 was reported. With the best fishing being on the Middle Mertoun and Junction beats where 4 springers were landed.

34 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 16lb Salmon caught on the Bemersyde beat.

One bit of great news this week was finally after a long wait the anticipation can build for the fabulous Contented Vine reopening on the 17th May. I for one am looking forward to finally getting back. To reserve a table for the reopening call 01573 224777.

With the relaxation of some restrictions, Self-Catering accommodation on the English side of the river reopens from Monday.

If you catch a tagged fish then please take a note of the tag number, this can be made easier by taking a photo of the tag. To report a tagged fish please contact the Tweed Foundation on 01896 848 277 or the Head Fishery Officer on 07884 230 045.

On Upper North Wark, very lightly fished last week with more focus on some wee jobs around the beat. Any enquiries or booking requests please call Martin on 07825334427.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr Lee Ross reports “Still low water too low for our preferable height. Yet midweek one of our committee members Mr Ian Hunter managed to land a beautiful 11lb bar of silver from Clarabad Mill, On a 9' #5.. Well done and well deserved after all the hours he's put into the bank maintenance on beat 1. Prospects look good for the week ahead with the warmer weather forecast... These North winds are a killer... Old saying goes apparently the strong North wind stirs the sand bar in the estuary and the fish aren't keen on passing through it. Let's hope for a better forecast this week and tight lines to everyone

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 9” and the water temperature is 42.

At this stage in the report I would normally have my suggested beats to book for the week ahead, however with all the Covid Restrictions in place and each beat using their own guidelines I will refrain from suggestions until the river is opened back up for fishing a bit more normally.

The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will be a dry day with plenty of sunshine. However, some patchy cloud may drift in at times during the afternoon. Feeling milder than previous days. Tuesday will likely see a mixture of sunshine and showers, but there is some uncertainty regarding the amount of rain that is likely to fall. Wednesday and Thursday look drier and settled as high pressure builds in. Wednesday may remain quite cloudy, but Thursday looks to be a fine day. Feeling milder as the week progresses.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week ahead, Floating with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats. Gledswood Shrimp, Tritton Shrimp, Willie Gunn, Monkey and Aurora Cascade are all capable to tempting fish on around ½”- 1” tubes, dressed flies are now worth a go more often in a size 8-12s. On the spinning front Rapala, Flying C and Toby should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
