River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th May
Well
after weeks of pretty doom and gloom reports with not much happening on the
river we finally got a bit of a lift during Tuesday with the river rising all
day bringing tons and tons of slimey algae which nearly every cast the fly or
spinner was covered in it. It wasn’t a big rise with it peaking about 3ft 2” at
Sprouston. Wednesday the river was chocolate with pretty limited fishing
effort. Thusday morning the river was settling on and a dark beery colour and
what a difference the list seemed to make to the fish. With 23 salmon reported
before the lift and 129 after the lift from Thursday to Saturday. Some good
catches were made on individual days with BDAA Whiteadder landing 8 on
Thursday, Lower Floors 8 on Friday and Junction 10 on Thursday, 8 on Friday and
7 on Saturday, also on Saturday Sprouston landed 10. So far the season looks to
be following a similar trend to last season, are we in for another good late
spring/summer of fishing? Time will tell. With conditions looking quite good
for the week ahead hopes must be high for a good weeks catch.
Fishing
at the Junction Mr Stuart Mourne landed 7 there was also success on the beat
for Mr Adam Perkin, Mr Jonathan Maugham, Mr David Simpson and Mr Alan Morrison
with fish been caught all over the beat. Mr Terry Harper had 2 nice fresh fish
at the Lees, one from the Learmouth Stream and one from the Cauld Stream on a
Willie Gunn tube fly. Mr David Gobby landed a lovely fresh 5lber from the
Jedforest water on the River Teviot. Mr Connor Alexander Newcombe landed 2 from
the BDAA stretch of the River Whiteadder. Mr Mike Blee had a 2lb fresh sea
trout from the Tiptoe beat on the River Till.
Above Kelso 40 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 75 were reported and below Coldstream 20 was reported. With the best
fishing being on the Junction beat where 27 springers were landed. Sprouston
also had a good week landing 20.
152 Salmon and 15 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 24lb Salmon
caught on the Junction beat.

Lower
Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well after the seemingly endless
low cold water and east winds, we got a break! The rain fell, the wind changed
and judging by the weeks catches river wide, the fish came. Why do we ever
doubt it, they have been running the river hundreds of years. All you need is
some water, some hope and willing anglers to catch them. Monday started low and
then the sight of the river levels rising in the evening got things moving. It
wasn’t until Thursday that we got the Benefit of the rise. But we ended up
catching fresh (some sea liced) fish every day for the rest of the week. All
decent sized fish and super fresh. Each one a standout reminder of just how
good spring fish do look. Hearing from reports around they are similar, fresh
fish and bigger fish which is great news.While we sit here this weekend, we are
glad that the rain forecast wasn’t right and never fell. So it leaves the river
in cracking order for the week ahead. Hopefully some fish settle with us and
the fish keep running up. Catching a fin perfect spring fish is the stuff of
dreams, let’s hope we can get amongst them again this week! Tight lines. Tom”

Upper North Wark, a frustration few days after the lift with 3 fish lost and a

Lees Head Boatman Mr
Malcolm Campbell reports “A cold week on the Lees with north east or south
east winds. Water temps in the low 40s did not make for pleasant fishing. 5
fish for the week 4 of them brand new. Terry Harper getting 2 on Friday which
made his trip. We hardly saw a fish show all week but they were going through
the beat and beats round Kelso had some great sport. I'm hoping the levels will
drop in a wee bit and some will stop with us next week. With the cold water
temps we were still on fast sinktips but temps are to lift next week which
should help as lately the colder it gets the harder they seem to run. Have a

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr Lee
Ross reports “Well we got the water we were waiting for finally, and with it
dropping quickly the next day 2 fish were caught then the following day we had 8
reported, and 1 on Friday and two on Saturday tallying up to 13 for the week,
mostly caught on flies such as Gledswood, posh tosh and Alistair. The water
dropped from 4' to 1'2" by Saturday so hopefully this little bit of rain
next week will freshen things up a bit.”

ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 5” and the water temperature is 40.
Looking
at the availability for the week ahead I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Upper
North Wark and West Learmouth to be in with a chance of fish this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow, widespread showers will
develop and persist through the day. Showers will be locally heavy for some
with the odd rumble of thunder, but with a few sunny spells in between. Tuesday
will be another relatively mild day with largely cloudy skies and outbreaks of
rain at times, potentially heavy and thundery. Staying breezy. Wednesday will
be a cloudy day with further heavy showers with a risk of thunder, and it will
remain breezy. Not as mild. Thursday will be a cooler day and it will remain
cloudy with further heavy and thundery showers.

Look at
what to bring for the week ahead, Floating with assorted poly leaders should
suffice on most beats. Gledswood Shrimp, Tritton Shrimp, Ghillie, Sunray Shadow
and Aurora Cascade are all capable to tempting fish on around ½”- ¾” tubes,
dressed flies are now worth a go more often in a size 8-12s. On the spinning
front Rapala, Flying C and Toby should bring results.
