River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 28th August
Fishing
continues to be a struggle with the continued low water and with the return of
the bright sunshine and clear skies made conditions even harder to catch.
Success was had with some early stays before the harr cleared and in the early
evenings. The bulk of the catch still appears to be river fish with some fresh
grilse amongst them. The river is badly needing a good clean out with the
bottom of the river very dirty and lots of algae still hanging about the slack
sections.
Above Kelso 40 fish were reported,
Between Kelso and Coldstream 95 were reported and below Coldstream 67 were
reported. With the best fishing being on the Sprouston and Ladykirk beat’s
where 18 salmon were landed.
206 Salmon and 17 Sea Trout were
landed for the week with the best fish 22lb Salmon caught on the West Learmouth
beat.
Places to Stay, Eat and Browse Locally
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1” and the water temperature is 60.
Looking
at the availability for the week ahead, the river is really busy with not much
availability for the next few months. If you are looking to fish the river I
would suggest booking sooner rather than later to avoid missing out. I would
recommend Tillmouth and Horncliffe Beats to be in with a chance of fish this
week.
The
forecast this coming week, it will be another largely cloudy
day today, with just a small chance of one or two brighter spells in places. It
should be mostly dry, however a few patches of drizzle may drift in. Tomorrow
will continue rather grey and cloudy for a time, with a few spells of drizzle
around. During the afternoon, cloud will break up in a few places to give some
sunny spells. High pressure will remain in charge for Thursday and
Friday. Conditions will stay settled, and while there may be some cloud around
in the mornings, there should be plenty of afternoon sunshine. Largely dry, but
the odd spot of drizzle is possible under any cloud. Turning breezier on
Saturday as the high pressure moves away, but it should stay dry with a few
sunny spells.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Look at
what to bring for the week ahead, floating with assorted poly leaders should
suffice on most beats. Red and Black Frances, Willie Gunn Flamethrower, Ghillie,
Sunray Shadow, Silver Stoat’s Tail and Editor are all capable to tempting fish
on around ¼”- ½” tubes, dressed flies are now worth a go more often in a size
8-14s. On the spinning front Rapala, Flying C and Toby should bring results.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
