River Tweed River Report Week Ending 31st July
An
interesting week as the temperature cooled slightly and some fish entered the
bottom river with a wee boost in the catches. Reports seem to be a mixture of
grilse and summer salmon but overall they are still very thin on the ground.
Prospects of rain seems to come along but then it all seems to miss the
catchment. No real lifts to speak off so long hard days fishing over slime
until the next proper water comes. Fishing at Dryburgh Upper Mr David Greer
landed a salmon on a wee Silver Stoat while Mr Ian Wynn landed a Sea Trout.
Above Kelso 9 fish were reported,
Between Kelso and Coldstream 15 were reported and below Coldstream 65 were
reported. With the best fishing being on the Ladykirk beat where 25 salmon were
landed, Tillmouth and Horncliffe also had better weeks landing 16 apiece.
89 Salmon
and 5 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 26lb Salmon caught
on the Upper Makerstoun beat.
River
Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th August
The
promising end to last week continued into Monday with some better numbers
of fish being caught but it didn’t continue and the catches dropped back to 3
or 4 fish landed a day of the whole river. Again the prospect of some good rain
missed the catchment and the river stays well below summer level as it has done
for what seems like months now. The season continues to be a struggle to catch
a fish, until a proper flood comes it is showing no signs of improving
currently.
Fishing
at the Junction Mr Scott Kent landed 2. Mr Steve Robins landed a good fish from
Little Davy on the Sprouston beat on a size 14 Silver Stoat. On Waltham and
Dritness, Mr Ron Martin landed a nice grilse about 6lbs and Mr Jack Weighman
also landed a grilse. On the BDAA water on the River Whiteadder Mr Peter
Hastings landed a grilse from Hutton Bridge while Mr Callum Simpson landed a
Sea Trout on an Editor Sunray from Tay Salmon Fly.
Above Kelso 11 fish were
reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 16 were reported and below Coldstream 35
were reported. With the best fishing being on the Ladykirk beat where 11 salmon
were landed.
63 Salmon and 10 Sea Trout were
landed for the week with the best fish 14lb Salmon caught on the Milne Graden
beat.
River
Tweed River Report Week Ending 14th August
A dirty start to the week with
some rain finally hitting the Tweed catchment after what seemed like an
eternity of us missing the rain while all around us was getting a good rise and
localised flooding. The first couple of days were slow given the dirty, algae
and weed filled river as it settled down the old residents came back on the
take with a few fresh grilse amongst them. As the week progressed good catches
were made on the lower river which continued through to the end of the week.
Above Kelso 76 fish were
reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 183 were reported and below Coldstream
123 were reported. With the best fishing being on the Junction and Horncliffe
beat’s where 26 salmon were landed. Ladykirk 25 and Sprouston 23 also had good
weeks.
394 Salmon and 76 Sea Trout were
landed for the week with the best fish 20lb Salmon caught on the Junction beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom
Davis reports “Well, it seems like a long time since we were waking up on a
Sunday morning thinking of the things to do, and on top of the to do list for
the day was writing last week’s fishing report, Without some creative ideas,
clever wording and the story of when we get water I’m sure the fish will
come... But the water that landed last week made writing this report not only
easy but even with a smile on our face. We ended up with 8 salmon and a sea
trout for the week. Plenty of others seen and a few on and off. But it was Terrific
to see the scores every evening of better catches, some fresher fish and happy
fishermen. A large number of our fish were old river fish, had they been with
us all the time? Had they been down the bottom end of the river and moved up?
Who knows? But in the end we don’t care. We caught them, we had fun and the
fish went away strongly. So a good result all around. The water that came
wasn’t big or lasted long. But it was a breath of fresh air to bring a load of
more optimism back to the river. Let’s hope that this continues and maybe
another little lift to bring in some more fish. Fingers crossed for another
week like last, we can only hope! Tight lines. Tom.
Berwick and District Angling
Association Secretary Mr Lee Ross reports “Well after weeks and weeks of no
water we finally got a little rain on Friday night. We had a rise of over a
foot then it dropped to 1'3 by Saturday morning. But very coloured with hardly
any visibility. Later on that day Callum Simpson had a lovely sea trout caught
on a fly made by Tay Salmon Fly and Peter Hastings had a lovely little grilse
too. I had a look at the river from Hutton Bridge this afternoon and it’s clear
again but back down to six inches and steady. If it sustains this level, then
the usual suspects will do the trick, intermediate tips, small dressed flies
like cascade, Gledswood, ally shrimp, posh tosh. Or even micro tubes and cone
heads in the faster deeper pools. Tight lines everyone on the tweed system for
this week ahead”
River
Tweed River Report Week Ending 21st August
The week
started off well with upwards of 150 salmon being reported on Monday and
Tuesday, but as the water started to drop back to below summer levels the catches
almost halved. The best of the fishing is still around the lower river with
some fresh fish pushing in off the tides keeping the numbers up. It would
appear that a good head of Sea Trout are not going to appear this year with the
season's catch still below 350 which will be well below average for the time of
year and in all reality they are past their bests by now. A bit of rain fell on
Saturday but not a huge impression was made on the river with mainly the
Ettrick getting a rise. The water looked quite coloured this morning at
Gledswood so there might be some colour to greet the lower beats Monday
morning.
Mr Arron
Bortoft fishing at Dryburgh Upper landed a nice fish. Fishing on Horncliffe Mr
Jamie McCulloch landed 2 nice fresh fish for his day, both fish falling to a
Willie Gunn Snaelda from Tay Salmon Fly.
Above Kelso 49 fish were
reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 123 were reported and below Coldstream
120 were reported. With the best fishing being on the Ladykirk beat where 26
salmon were landed. Horncliffe 23 and Tillmouth 21 also picked away during the
week.
301 Salmon and 23 Sea Trout were
landed for the week with the best fish 17lb Salmon caught on the Hendersyde
beat.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 64.
Looking
at the availability for the week ahead, the river is really busy with not much
availability for the next few months. If you are looking to fish the river I
would suggest booking sooner rather than later to avoid missing out. I would
recommend Milne Graden, Pedwell and Horncliffe Beats to be in with a chance of
fish this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will have a cloudy start,
but in the afternoon, cloud will become more broken and give way to some sunny
spells. It should stay largely dry but there is a small chance of an isolated
shower. Tuesday will remain a largely dry day, with good spells of
sunshine, very little in the way of cloud, and light winds. On Wednesday, it
should continue settled with sunny spells and plenty of dry weather. On
Thursday, it looks to start cloudy, but with sunny spells developing later in
the day as cloud tends to clear.

Look at
what to bring for the week ahead, floating with assorted poly leaders should
suffice on most beats. The water could be a bit coloured tomorrow morning. Gledswood
Shrimp, Willie Gunn Flamethrower, Ghillie, Sunray Shadow, Silver Stoat’s Tail
and Editor are all capable to tempting fish on around ¼”- ½” tubes, dressed
flies are now worth a go more often in a size 8-14s. On the spinning front
Rapala, Flying C and Toby should bring results.
