River Tweed River Report Week Ending 26th August
After last weeks unsettled conditions, things for looking good for Monday morning with the water settling in and the colour had nearly cleared and the catches didn’t disappoint with 97 fish been reported. Fishing rather tailed off after Monday and the remainder of the week was a struggle with a few wee lifts and some rather black coloured water appearing on Thursday. The quality of the fish been caught is varying from fresh grilse to older salmon. Conditions look better heading into this coming week so hopefully we will see some good fresh fish arriving.
Some bigger Salmon and Sea Trout were caught amongst a reported catch of 223 Salmon and 27 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week 17lb Salmon with similar sized fish caught on a few different beats and 9lb Sea Trout from Junction.
Above Kelso 67 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made at on Middle Mertoun 12, Rutherford 9, the Makerstoun Beats with 6, Upper Floors 8 & Lower Floors with 4.
Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Very quiet!”
Between Kelso and Coldstream 115 Salmon were reported with catches spread out over this area, with the some of the better catches being made on Junction 12 Salmon, Upper Hendersyde 6, Hendersyde 19, Sprouston 12, Birgham Dub 21, West Learmouth 10 and the Lees with 23 Salmon.
Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Disappointing week after last week’s water. Plenty fish running 2nd half of the week with the river unsettled again. Good few fresh grilse and older fish seen. 6 for the week with 2 liced”
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A strange week, got off to a great start on Monday with 15 Salmon and a Sea Trout. One lucky fisherman getting 12 to his own rod all on a full floater and a size 8 shrimp pattern. The rest of the week was a struggle picking away between small lifts. Finished the week with 19 Salmon and a Sea Trout”
Mr Mike Burch fishing at Carham reports “Mr James Heppell arranged a treat at Carham for some friends to celebrate his upcoming big birthday. Four of us shared 3 rods and all four of us caught a salmon. One at 10lbs, two at 12lbs and one at 8lbs. Quite a success for a birthday party”
On Upper North Wark, The week started with not a bad level but dropped away as the week went on. Seeing the odd fish but only managed 1 grilse for the week.
Below Coldstream the conditions were slightly better this week, but still a bit more water than the beats would like. 29 Salmon were landed with the best of the catches coming from Tillmouth 10 and Ladykirk with 8.
Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “2 fish all week, young 11 year old Fred Sloss had a 15lber on Wednesday, only his second salmon that he has caught. We had a few fish holding up with us at the start of the week. Black water ruined the fishing towards the end of the week. Seen plenty fish moving through”
Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Monday was ok with 2 salmon to same day rod and biggest for the week to syndicate rod, 14lb, and a fresh one at 7lb to myself. Then, just for a change, more unsettled river conditions with only plucks and pulls but nothing hooked for the next 3 days, only 1 on Friday for the same day rod again which was badly seal damaged and 3 small grilse to syndicate rods on Saturday. Next week should hopefully be a bit more settled...”
On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till had some catches with Tiptoe 1 Salmon & 1 Sea Trout while on Redscar and Upper Tidal 1 Salmon & 3 Sea Trout were reported. The middle Ettrick reported 3 Salmon.
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water temperature is 58.
Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Boleside and Ladykirk beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.
The forecast this coming week looks quite settled with a southerly breeze and a chance of some showers up the top ends at the start of the week.
As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, If you prefer tubes over dressed flies 3/4” and 1” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Cascader, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Editor Sunray Shadow, Red Frances and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Black/Gold Rapala Tobies in 18gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie
