River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 9th September
Well another week has passed with not a huge amount to report. The
fishing has remained patchy with mostly coloured fish been reported with the
odd fresher fish. A small lift towards the end of the week may shuffle the fish
around for this coming week. This week also brings to end the spinning for 2017
season with the 14th been the final day. 141 Salmon and 25 Sea Trout, with
the best fish for the week was 23lb Salmon from Lower Birgham.
Above
Kelso 54 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made at on Middle
Mertoun 13 & Lower Floors with 8.
Mr
Douglas Aitken fishing at Middle Mertoun Reports "We finished the week on
Tweed with 13 Salmon to 19lbs and 6 Sea Trout to 10lbs. Mixed conditions and a
day and a half lost to high coloured water. What was worrying to us all was no
fresh fish landed and only a handful seen on Saturday when the river was
falling. All the fish were caught on fly and they were all returned safely to
continue their journey to find a mate. We used floating lines with a range of
sinking tips with small doubles in the low water to 1 inch tubes in the higher
water. Hot cascade Victoria's Secret and junction Gunns were the top
patterns"
Between
Kelso and Coldstream 49 Salmon were reported with Junction 11 & Lower
Birgham 10 having the better of the fishing.
Hendersyde
Head Boatman Ketch reports “A frustrating week with only a few offers from old
residents. We managed 4 fish with the best a 20lb cock fish in full spawning
colours, only a hen fish would say he’s handsome”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Biggest
fish of year for us 23lb. 2 sea liced grilse on Wednesday. Saw quite a lot of
older fish”
On Upper
North Wark, Seeing the odd fish but only managed 1 grilse for the week. Serious number of Goosanders on
the beat with over 60 on 1 pool alone :-( these birds must be doing some
serious damage to the Tweeds stocks of juvenile fish.
Below
Coldstream 30 Salmon were landed with the best of the catches coming from
Tillmouth 7 and Ladykirk Beats with 9.
Milne
Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “3 Grilse all week, none of them
sea liced. Saw a few fresh grilse on Friday morning before the water came up.
Seeing a few tiny grilse around the pound mark”
Ladykirk
Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Fresh
17lb on Wednesday and liced 5lb grilse (1st ever salmon for the rod) was
it for the upper beats. On lower Ladykirk we finished with 7 and a very
coloured sea trout for the week, including 20lb liced hen on Saturday, which got
sportingly returned. Let's hope for a few more of these big autumn fish to
arrive soon...
On the
tributaries, the main beats on the Till was quiet with Tiptoe 1 Salmon.
Mr David
Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary reports” Whiteadder has not moved above a few inches all week. Now
settled into normal summer low condition however it has been a good year for
water levels so far. Still fish showing but rain needed to bring the fresh fish
up. ”
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 1” and the water temperature is 54.
Looking
at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Ladykirk beats should
have a good chance of some action this coming week.
The
forecast this coming week looks a bit unsettled with some very strong winds
(Wednesday 60-70MPH!!)And a chance of some heavy rain throughout the week.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s
you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Water
temperatures are starting to cool down dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, if you
prefer tubes over dressed flies 3/4” and 1” should be about right. Copper
Cascade, Cascader, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Snaelda, Red Frances
while on the spinning front the 13cm Black/Gold Rapala Tobies in 18gm – 20gm
and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring
some success. Please remember spinning ceases on the 14th. As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie
