River Tweed River Report Week Ending 4th November 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 4th November

It’s been a hard week with not many fish to work with in the lower river, catches remain pretty poor and with increased numbers off redds and kelts around it almost feels like the river is closing itself. Reports are still of plenty old fish hanging around certain areas of the river but these fish are dour to take, the very odd fresh fish is been caught. Looking at the daily catch there seems to be some big fish been caught on a daily basis, most seem to be big auld springer’s that have moved up the river.

Fishing at Haystoun, Mr Nigel Bliss landed his first Tweed salmon using an Ailie’s Comet Bottle Tube and weighed 6lbs. Well done Sir hopefully the first of many.

Fishing at Cardrona Mr Bill Cook landed 3 salmon up to 22lbs while on Maxton Mr Sean McGarry had a good day landed a superb 26lb croc and losing a couple of others.

208 Salmon and 28 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 26lb Salmon caught on the Maxton Beat.

Tweedswood Head Ghillie Mr Kevin Patterson reports “Well as we roll into Nov it’s looking very interesting to see if the fish keep going upstream and also if they keep taking a fly Its been ok again this week and finished ok last week which is good . it’s not got that feeling of the rivers closing its self and i think that with falling rivers and quite a few rods on various beats at very attractive prices you could enjoy a backend experience we at Tweedswood have given the chance to get involved at the right price in November I hope that people take the chance and have a few days if the waters right it will be great fun and with a lovely warm hut what’s stopping you. if you just said to yourself there's no fish then yes its maybe not for you but i can certainly guarantee 8 hours of trying flat out trying to catch one and there's always plenty fish there it’s just to many people that get it into each other’s heads that it’s no good I’ve done it for the last 26years and I can’t wait for tomorrow”

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Mr Mick Charlton reports for October “The month got off to a slow start with nothing landed until the 12th! Mr Neil Sayers finally got us off the mark. Neil's first fish was caught in the Boat Shiel on Willie Gunn, the following day he added a second from the Elm Weil. The same day Mr Thor Jacobson from Norway, caught a Salmon and a Sea trout both from the Boat Shiel salmon on a Junction Shrimp, sea trout on a red Francis. The 16th and that man Tim Briggs added to his total with one from the Whirls on a Ally shrimp. Mr Nick Bateman caught a brace on the 18th one from the Whirls on a Tosh, another from the Boat Shiel on an Ally Shrimp. Nick followed this with our largest fish so far this season on the 20th an 18lb fish from the Boat Shiel on the Tosh again. Next to land a fish were the French boys on their annual visit Mr Guy Nardin landed the first one from the Boat Sheil on a Junction shrimp. The same day Mr Christophe Cuenot landed his first from the beat again in the Boat Sheil this time on a Posh Tosh, he followed this up the next day with a fish from the Beech Tree. Mr Tim Briggs returned for the last two days of the month and all but made sure he retains his top rod trophy! Tim's first fish came from the Bridge pool on a St Clemence, the following day Tim added another brace to his total this time from the boat in the Elm weil, one on the St Clemence one on the Ally Shrimp”

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “5 for the week, 1 fresh”

Above Kelso 97 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made on the Glenormiston 7 & Traquair 14.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 70 Salmon were reported with Junction 10, Hendersyde 5, Sprouston 7, Birgham Dub 20, South Wark 14 & Lees 6

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “21lber on Saturday”

On Upper North Wark, 1 fresh grilse on Monday and a couple lost.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A quiet week with only one fresh fish to show for our efforts the other 5 being a mix of colours. 91 year old John Wilkinson had the fish of the week getting an 8lb liced cock, the beat is getting quieter now as fish are leaving us but there are still enough old ones about to frustrate the anglers as they won't pull at the fly. It's going to be a long month. ”

Below Coldstream, fishing continues to be hard work with 7 Salmon landed. Ladykirk had the best of the fishing with 5 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout

Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “1 for the week, caught by myself”

Ladykirk Head Boatman Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Not a bad week for us 1st half of week:
5 salmon up to 17lb (5 & 6lb grilse were fresh, rest coloured) and 3 sea trout up to 5lb (4 & 5lb fresh). Not bad going for us at this time of year...

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till were quiet this week with no fish reported. Over on the River Ettrick no fish were reported, while on the Teviot no fish were reported.

Mr David Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary reports” Whiteadder hasn’t risen above 3 inches all week and no fish to report.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 11” and the water temperature is 45.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Horsburgh & Hendersyde beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks like a cold frost start to the week before a band of heavy rain comes over on Tuesday then another band of rain on Thursday. Wind appears to be with us most of the week.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Water temperatures are starting to cool down dressed flies in sizes 6 or 8, if you prefer tubes over dressed flies 3/4” and 1” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Tritton Shrimp, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Snaelda, Red Frances & Junction Shrimp should bring success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
