River Tweed Looking Forward To The 2018 Salmon Fishing Season
With the close season coming to an end and we get back on the oars searching the pools for the elusive and highly sought after Spring Salmon with an anticipation of what the season will bring.
The winter has been quite a bit colder than recent years with some days of grue and a fair bit of snow during early January. On the 23rd January the temperature increased to 10 degrees and a quick thaw occurred, reaching around 9ft on the Sprouston Gauge on Fishtweed, this was followed by a night of heavy rain which put the river up quickly and around 16:45 it peaked at 11ft 7” on the Sprouston Gauge. Hopefully conditions will settle down and give us good fishing conditions for opening day on the 1st February.
Upper Dryburgh have appointed Mr Brian Douglas as their Head Boatman, Brian brings a wealth of experience and will be a great asset to the beat. I would like to wish Brian every success for the season ahead and many more in the future.
In the early part of the season the Springer’s tend to be caught around the Kelso area. If your aren’t already booked up, beats worth having a cast on Upper North Wark, Lower Birgham, Lower Makerstoun, if the conditions go a bit milder, Upper and Lower Dryburgh, Rutherford will be worth a cast.
Some very rare early season availability has come up on the South Wark beat. The beat is around 2 miles in length and runs down the English side of the river with Upper North Wark, Lower North Wark and the Lees on the opposite bank. A lovely mixture of streamy fly runs to deeper parks provide ample areas for springers to hold up. Head Boatman Mr Richard Farr over see’s the daily running of the beat with 2 rods assisted by 2 boatmen. Prices start from £40+VATprpd. Please contact John Lovett for further information/bookings 01668 215421/07836 370661 or Email: john@warkestate.co.uk
