River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th March
Well I thought I didn’t have much to write
about last week, but this week was even worse! Fishing at the Junction Mr
Ritchie Gallagher got off to a great start on Monday morning landing two
cracking springer’s weighing 20lb and 14lbs. With the milder conditions, we were
expecting a thaw with the amount of snow lying around and as expected the water
started to colour up on Monday afternoon and pretty much continued to give us a
daily rise which kept the colour in all week making it near unfishable the
remainder of the week.
As I write today there is 6ft of dirty brown
water going past, which will ruin the chances of fishing Monday and possibility
into Tuesday. Hopefully on the back of this flood we get some good settled
conditions and let the beats get fishing.
On Upper North Wark, Dirty water all week, hopefully after today’s flood
settled we should be in with a good chance of catching some springer’s.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Mr David Cowan reports” Whiteadder
started the week at just under 1ft 6 inches but rose to 4ft on Wednesday with the snow
melt. At 2ft 6 inches on Saturday prospects for the coming week looked good but its back
up to 5ft and falling this morning. River getting a good clean out and if the
rain stops rods might get on later in the week”
Andrew Lee of Bluestone Fishing on
the Whiteadder reports “Saturday's rain and snow melt
has again put the river up to over 4ft today. This lift of mucky water will
take a couple of days to run off but but by Tuesday (13th)
and later this week the river should be clear and at a good level. As the date
approaches mid-March there should be fish in the river. Keep an eye on the
levels and when the river falls back to 2ft it is definitely worth a cast for
the first springer of 2018. Rods are available, Give me a call on 07787 505051
Anyone interested in a 2018 season rod is invited for a day as my guest in
March”
2 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb
Salmon caught on the Junction Beat.
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 6ft 1” and the water
temperature is 36.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Upper
North Wark and Lower Birgham should have a chance of a springer this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Tuesday will see early cloud and a
few spots of rain, but it will be drier with some sunshine and fair-weather
cloud during the afternoon. Further mist and fog overnight. Wednesday and
Thursday will bring an unsettled theme, as they will remain rather cloudy and
windy, with bands of rain edging in from the south or south-west.
As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the
information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any
information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin
on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly
leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if
that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of
the day, some anglers are choosing to fish more with Aluminium tubes and using
the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow
(Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A
wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this
time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, the Salmo Toby, Devon
Minnow fished nice and slow should bring results.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman
or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please
