River Tweed River Report Week Ending 28th April 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 28th April

For the time of year and given reasonable water conditions catches remain on the low side, given the amount of rod effort. Fingers crossed the fish start to appear soon. Conditions last week weren’t too bad apart from a few little rises around 1 inch a few days.

Above Kelso is starting produce a few more fish with 20 reported. Middle Pavilion got off and running for the season with Mr Tim Briggs landed a nice fish on Friday from the Boat Sheil and followed this up with a 2nd fish on Saturday again from the Boat Sheil. On Dryburgh Upper Mr Leigh Final landed 2 nice fish on Friday, weighing 9lb and 7lb both taken on a size 8 Cascade. The Floors beats picked away during the week and landed 8 fish.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 26 fish were reported with Hendersyde 5, Sprouston 8 having the best of the fishing. Mr Sandy Wilson landed a 9lber from the Junction and Mr Will Haggas had success fishing Hendersyde.

Below Coldstream 7 fish were reported, Tweedhill got off and running with 1 on Wednesday and followed that up with 2 on Thursday. Tillmouth also had 3 for the week. Hopefully be a few more around this week with the lower water levels starting to suit these beats.

60 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Sprouston Beat.

On Upper North Wark, a tough week with the water level now at 10 inches, good effort was made by the rods but no success was had. Seen some fish on Tuesday that were moving through.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Nothing to report for Whiteadder.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the West Learmouth beat, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Upper Dryburgh & Lower Dryburgh beats should have a chance of a springer this week. With the water levels dropping in below Coldstream is starting to produce some fish so the Ladykirk beat could be worth a cast.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday will start off dry and bright but will become rather cloudy with rain pushing in from the west later in the day. On Wednesday, early rain will clear eastwards to give way to a scattering of showers, some of which will be rather heavy, with a slight risk of thunder. Windy too. Mostly fine initially on Thursday but rain will push east later. Rather breezy.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating or Intermediate lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Aluminium or Copper tubes around 1” should be the order of the day, some anglers may prefer a big dressed fly around a size 6 or 8. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Girnel Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp and Underghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 21st April 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 21st April

I would like to start the report this week by wishing Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels a very happy 50th birthday Sir.

Full time 2nd boatman job available on Upper North Wark beat on the River Tweed. For more details or to apply with CV contact Martin on 07825334427 or email bookings@uppernorthwarkfishing.com

A very up and down week last week with high winds to coloured water to scorchio making fishing very difficult and the catches followed a similar pattern, with catches scattered over the river. Above Kelso 14 fish were landed with the Floors beats landing 8 of them. Mr Duval from France got Upper Dryburgh off and running for the season with a lovely 8lber landed on Friday, Well done Brian and Mr Duval.

Between Kelso and Coldstream the likely beats landed a few fish with Junction 6, Hendersyde 5, Sprouston 5 and Birgham Dub having the best of the fishing. Mr Simon Bedford landed a superb 16lber at the Junction on Saturday.

It’s been a while this season but the 1st fish have been caught below Coldstream with Pedwell landing a fish on Monday and Tillmouth landing 1 on Friday.

47 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Sprouston Beat.

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “Nice to fish on shirt sleeves and land a couple of fish on intermediate lines and size 6 doubles, thought it was never comng”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A good start to the week with 3 fresh springers on the 1st run down the pools but the river started to rise and things went very quiet. Tuesday was a challenge to with high winds making things tough for the fly but Mr Peter Allan managed to land his first salmon. A good result considering the conditions. By the end of the week it felt more like the Costa Del Sol with the sun blazing down. (We’re never happy!) but we managed one more fish on Saturday bringing our total for the week to 5.

On Upper North Wark, a tough week with high winds at the start of the week, dirty water on Wednesday followed by glorious hot sunny weather to finish the week. We had 1 fish for the week a nice 10lber landed on the Fly by Mr Stuart Norris.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “We had a cracking 16lber on Monday from Learmouth stream but that was it for the week. The weather has been kind to us this week, we did see fish going through on a couple of days but they don't want to hang around here at the moment. Let’s keep the levels dropping which might stop some fish down here”

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder started the week quite high at over two foot but very clean. Only one fish reported on BDAA water, a very fresh run fish at 8lb. River dropped away all week and still at over a ft with prospects looking good for the coming week. Water right and fresh fish running in”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 6” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the West Learmouth beat, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Upper Dryburgh & Lower Dryburgh beats should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday will be breezy, with some sunny spells but also a scattering of showers from the west. Showers may merge into longer spells of rain overnight, but confidence is low. Wednesday will see widespread heavy and thundery showers developing, with some sunshine in-between too. Showers slowly easing overnight. Banks of cloud and further blustery showers on Thursday too.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 14th April 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 14th April

The week started with a high brownish water that wasn’t ideal but a few fish were caught. Tuesday saw the return of the North East winds which stayed with us until Saturday, making fishing conditions a bit tricky. There were reports of a Seal seen above Wark on Tuesday morning, which may have moved some fish further up the river towards the Junction. Given the water conditions we might have expected a few more fish caught, but as they say when the wind blows from the east the fish bite least. Hoping for better things this coming week with some warmer weather forecast after a windy start.

On Thursday Mt Jack Power from Cork fishing on the Tweed for the 1st time landed a cracking 12lbs springer on the fly from Hempseedford ably assisted by boatman Pud Murray.

66 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub Beat.

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “Another cold and fairly quiet week apart from an exciting half hour for the Beresford-Davies lads, 13 year old Archie catching his 1st salmon  then older brother Ollie 15, jumping into the boat while the sea was still warm to take his fish off the same lie, well done boys, you’re the future”

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “4 nice fish to 12lbs, 1st half of the week, couldn’t get a pull 2nd half, water colour didn’t help Friday and Saturday”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A tough week with the wind making things almost impossible at times and inbetween reminding the rods they’re having fun while been lashed in the face by rain. We did manage to land 3 springers, one of them a very nice 17lber.

On Upper North Wark we had a good start to the week landed 2 sea liced springers and a sea trout on the fly from the Mill Stream, Some other brief contacts were made along with a nice fish lost in the Dub on Wednesday on the fly. Water coloured up Friday and Saturday that made things a bit trickier.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder finally settled down at 2ft.  Clean with slight tinge and in perfect condition for the start of next week. Fish seen running over the gauging station earlier this week by visiting anglers washed off Tweed but nothing reported caught so far. Rise in temperature might stop them running through over the next few weeks. Prospects looking better than so far this season.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 9” and the water temperature is 44.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Lower Birgham, West Learmouth beats, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Upper Dryburgh beat should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, rather cloudy and windy on Tuesday with rain or drizzle at times, and it will feel rather cool in the fresh southerly winds. Any early rain on Wednesday will soon clear, with most of the day dry and sunny, although still rather breezy. It will be very mild. Thursday will be a fine and dry day with light southerly winds, and it will be rather warm.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of the day, some anglers are choosing to fish more with Aluminium tubes and using the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby and Devon Minnow fished nice and slow should bring results.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 7th April 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 7th April

After a couple of weeks of some better fishing conditions we were back to miserable rising water on a daily basis. A combination of snow melt and some rain kept the river pretty much unfishable Tuesday to Saturday which resulted in a very low catch for the week. Hopefully things will improve this week and we get back on the river.

Mr Nigel Devine landed a nice fish on the fly from Lower Floors on Friday in rather tricky conditions. Well done.

7 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 11lb Salmon caught on the Upper Makerstoun and Birgham Dub Beats.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder up and down that there is nothing to report this morning at all. Just can’t get on”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3ft 9” and the water temperature is 39.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Upper North Wark beat, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Upper Dryburgh beat should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday is expected to be a cloudy, windy day with the risk of some rain. There will also be a chance of some patchy rain on Tuesday night, but winds should ease a little. Wednesday, Wednesday night and Thursday will be rather cloudy with the further rain and drizzle at times, although it may become drier and brighter later on Thursday.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
