River Tweed River Report Week Ending 14th July
Another week of below summer level conditions haven’t
helped the catches much, but as one gentleman was telling me it is summer after
all! Which with some wisdom I had to smile and agree. With the wet summers over
the last few years and fish getting caught around the Kelso area, have we a
false impression of what we should be catching just now? Or are things just
back to normal weather wise and we can live in hope that the fish will arrive
back in the autumn? I have been reading a lot of doom and gloom posts recently
but really given the water level is below summer level and water temperatures
in the mid to high 70s most days why would the fish leave the sea to enter a
river full of floating algae, weed and smelly water. A good flood will clear
all that out and bring the water temperature back to sensible levels and then
we might see what fish are there to come. An increased catch at the bottom end
of the river with Tweedhill landed 10 for the week, with 9 coming at the end of
the week and reports of fish been seen in all the pools maybe there are just
starting to stick their heads into the river. Tillmouth picked away most days
for 8 fish landed.
3 of the week’s catch been reported caught
above Kelso. 16 fish were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 26 reported
below Coldstream. With the conditions we had on the river this week, well done
to those who put the effort in and were rewarded with some sport. This week
coming looks quite similar with hot sunshine forecast and very low water
conditions, below summer levels on most beats. Dawn and Dusk could be the best
times to be fishing.
On the River Till, nothing was reported
50 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 15lb Salmon
caught on the Tweedhill Beat.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports
“Fishing this week was tough and the guys fishing this week put in the time and
effort, in at first and last light and had some success. Surface lures and
small tubes worked well. A bit of rain could be very welcome and hopefully it
will give people confidence to book some of our available August fishing if the
river gets some more fish”
On
Upper North Wark, Another warm week and very low water conditions for us. Had
no fishers on this week so managed to get some work done on the beat to improve
a few things for our fishers. Mr Stuart Norris came for a cast on Saturday
evening and managed to winkle out a 7lber from the Mill Stream on a Dunkeld
single fly.
Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “5 Fish
hooked this week unfortunately only one landed. Seeing fish in all 3 beats,
also seeing fish running most days. If the water temperature carries on dropping
then things might could just switch on. Rain forecast for Monday maybe just
what we need to switch the fish on. Rods available for this week if you want a
reasonably chance of getting a salmon then give Horncliffe a go. Water level is
good , there are fish throughout the beat and it’s still a good price”
Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling
Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder still very much in need
of rain to flush out the river and nothing to report, however there are a few
more fish in the bottom end of the Tweed so given arise in water we could see
some good sport.”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston -1” and the water temperature
is 70.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Pedwell
and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, On Tuesday there will be sunny
spells and a few isolated showers. Overnight, clear spells. Wednesday, sunny
spells and the risk of a few showers again. Overnight, dry with clear spells.
Thursday, a bright start then cloud will increase. There is a risk of rain
edging in from the west overnight.

With water levels getting back towards summer levels and the water
temperature being in the late 60’s Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should
cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 12 to
14 should be the order of the day, I
would suggest are Copper Cascade, Stenton Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie
Shrimp, Editor and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the
spinner a go, Rapala or Toby should bring results.
