River Tweed River Report Week Ending 22nd September
After steady fishing with a good increase in
this catches last week conditions were going to ruin this week with hurricane
winds on Wednesday and dirty water at the end of the week, very unsettled to
say the least. Thursday was a total wash out with chocolate water. Given the
conditions the catch of 208 salmon would seem very respectable might have been
a few more if we could still chuck a spinner about. Not a huge amount to write
about this week, hopefully better conditions and more cheery news to write
about next week.
Ladykirk and Tillmouth continue to be the best
performing beats with 24 and 19 this week, Milne Graden sandwiched between
these 2 beats managed 10. Above Kelso the Mertoun beats with 10, Rutherford 11
and the Makerstoun beats with 10 had the best of the fishing.
To get ourselves refreshed during the week
myself and many fellow anglers retreated to the
Fabulous Contented Vine restaurant a few
evenings last week. As always great atmosphere, food and service, best in the
town by far. I must say a huge thank you to Alex during the hurricane winds we
had no power in the house and he very kindly managed to squeeze us in for a
great value early supper, far better than making toast over a candle! If in the
area the Contented Vine it a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to
reserve your table.
88 were reported caught above Kelso, 32 fish
were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 66 reported below Coldstream.
On the River Till, 1 Salmon was reported on the
Lower Tindal beat.
208 Salmon and 59 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 22lb Salmon
caught on the Boathouse & Canny Beat.
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “With the river rising
every other day and hurricane Ally blowing us off the water it made for a
frustrating week of fishing. We did manage to land 2 salmon and 2 sea trout”
On Upper North Wark, hurricane winds and unsettled brown
water made it a fun week for the fishers never mind the rowing. We did managed
a grilse on Saturday landed by Richard Farr from the Snipe a few other brief
connections were made but didn’t stick. We have dropped our November fishing to
£45prpd to enquire give Martin a call on 07825334427
Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Small rises colouring the water didn't help, that and the near hurricane which nearly blew the water out of the river. Saturday was a busy day, only 4 landed but twice as many lost and a good number of pulls. The fish seemed to prefer the shallow stream water”
Ladykirk
Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Surprisingly another good week for us
with rather high and dirty water. Combined we finished with 24 fish, equally
shared between ‘Ladykirk’ and ‘Ladykirk Lower’ and 2 heavily coloured sea trout
for ‘Ladykirk Lower’. A big “Well done” again for everyone involved”
Dave Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling
Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Despite a quick rise on Saturday to
5 inches Whiteadder fallen overnight and steady at 3 inches on Sunday morning.
No fish to report for the week and still needing rain”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water
temperature is 50.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Lower
Birgham, Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week. If you
fancy the middle river Rutherford and the Dryburgh beats will be worth a cast.
The
forecast this coming week, Tuesday will start out mostly dry
and fine, with plenty of sunny spells. It will gradually become cloudier in the
afternoon with some rain spread in from the west later. Wednesday will have a
wet and breezy start with spells of rain at times, but these will ease
overnight. Thursday should be mostly dry, but cloudy and breezy.
As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the
information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any
information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin
on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
With water levels up and down like a yoyo recently but still no real
flood and the temperature is back into the 50s. Floating lines with poly
leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment, maybe
pack an intermediate line just in case its required. Dressed flies around a
size 8 to 10 should be the order of the day, in the deeper pools it might be
worth a try with little 1/2” or 3/4” copper tubes. I would suggest are Copper
Cascade, Black Frances, Black and Yellow, Kylie Shrimp, Red Frances should
bring success. The river is now fly only until the end of the season on the 30th
November.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman
or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please
