River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 2nd March
A very strange week or a typically Scottish week
with temperatures reaching 17 degrees mid-week and back to freezing cold and
the thermals back on by Saturday, the sudden change back to cold weather seemed
to put the fish of the take Thursday and Friday as the catches dropped away
before picking back up a bit on Saturday.
The bulk of the catch does still seem to be below
Kelso but I have heard of reports of fish been seen up the middle river.
Rutherford got off the mark on Saturday with a lovely 9lb fish after having a
couple of fish shake the hook at the bank in previous weeks. Mr Chris Bryce and
Mr Eric MacKereth had success fishing the Floors Beats. The Junction had a
better week with 6 fish landed, Mr John McElroy and Mr Geoff Coates were
amongst the successful anglers. Sprouston with 5 and Lower North Wark with 7
had better weeks, Lower Birgham continued to have one of their best starts to a
season for a good few years with 4 for the week, and Mr Steven Atkins was one
of the successful rods on the beat this week. On Upper North Wark Mr Ian
Hayward proved fish can be caught on the beat in lower water conditions with a
fine 8lb fish from the Snipe pool on his own Hayward Gunn tube fly.
Was really good to get the chance to pop up to the Borders
Gunroom at St Boswells during the week, always great craic and a huge selection
of goodies to browse through, wallet was a bit lighter! Was good to catch up
with Dryburgh Upper ghillie Mr Brian Douglas who was looking forward to the
fish arriving on the beat and getting off and running for the year. Check out
Fishtweed if you would like to have a cast on the beat.
42 Salmon and
1 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught on the Sprouston
beat.
Hendersyde
Head Boatman Ketch reports “A tough couple of
weeks for most but at least it has been beautiful weather for being out on the
river. Daffodils popping their heads out, skylarks singing and yellow hammers
looking for bread & cheese. They're in for a shock now it's turned cold
again. Did have some success last wk though with 3 springers. (old faithful) 1
inch black & yellow tube”
Lower
Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “We have
had one of the best starts to our season for about 10 years. The water
conditions have favoured us and we have been very lucky with fresh fish and
picked away at kelts. We saw a few fish showing last week. And ended up with 4
salmon for the week, other possible fish lost aswell. It’s great value this
time of year where you stand a chance of one of these early season spring fish.
Fin perfect and fight like tigers. We’ve some availability for the next few
weeks aswell”
On Upper North Wark, the water level dropped in as the
week progressed with Tuesday and Wednesday been very hot with the air
temperature getting up to 17 degrees. Mr Ian Hayward landed a lovely 8lb fish
from the Snipe on the fly on Wednesday and lost something on Thursday. Water
levels rising tonight so we should have a better height the next couple of
weeks.
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 6” and the water temperature is 45.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Upper
Hendersyde, Lower Birgham and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of
some action this week. With the warmer water temperature Rutherford could be
worth a cast.
The
forecast this coming week, Lingering rain and hill snow will
clear east early on tomorrow to leave sunny spells and scattered locally heavy showers,
perhaps with hail and thunder. The wind will be a brisk westerly. Tuesday will
see an area of low pressure bring showers in, but there will still be drier and
brighter intervals. On Wednesday more widespread showery rain is likely, with
some spells likely to be on the heavy side. A return to scattered showers on
Thursday and at times it could be rather windy.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
With heavy
rain falling tonight and more forecast this week, could be back on to heavy
sinking lines with bit bright tubes like Junction Shrimp, Temple Shrimp and
Cascade. On the spinning front the good old 13cm Carrot Rapala could be getting
well used this week if the forecast is right.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
