River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 20th April
Well what a week nothing like Scottish Salmon
Fishing….. The week started with howling cold east winds blown up the river
given us nice white horse rolling up the pools then driving home on Saturday
evening the car was reading 27 degrees! All that was missing weather wise was
some snow!! On the fishing front I thing the weather played havoc and casting a
fly wasn’t easy and the spinning rod managed to make some progress through the
wind. The water level continued to drop over the week and the water temperature
shot up from 46 to 56 degrees by Saturday quite possibly bringing on a bit of
the itch. We saw a couple of fungi fish dropping back through us, possibly the
result of been handled poorly then returned looked nice silver fish to which is
a shame. With the lower water levels and high tides the bottom beats had some
good sport during the week and a few sea trout starting to appear.
Above Kelso 19 fish been reported with the Floors
beats having the best of the fishing with 11. Mr Roger Herberts phone has now
dried out and the photo of his fish from Bemersyde is included in this week’s
pictures.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 21 fish were reported
with Junction 8 the Lees 5 having the better of the fishing. Mr Jonathan
Redding fishing at the Lees with Boatman Paul Hume landed 3 cracking springers
on Monday. On the Junction Mr John McElroy was amongst the successful anglers
on the beat.
With the water levels starting dropping in fish are
starting to be reported below Coldstream in better numbers with 25 reported. Milne
Graden landed 4 with Boatman Kevin Wright picking away at them. Ladykirk had a
good week landing 13 springers. Mr Malcolm Taylor landing 2 on Tuesday, Mr John
McCann landed 3 on Wednesday on the fly, Mr Paul Knox landed is first ever
salmon on Thursday morning and in the afternoon Mr Paul Clayworth landed 2.
Fishing on the Waltham and Dritness syndicate water below Horncliffe Mr Ron
Martin landed a lovely sea liced fish of around 9lbs on the fly.
On the River Till, no fish were reported.
71 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 12lb Salmon caught
on the Tillmouth beat.
On Upper North Wark, a tough week with mostly east winds
blown up the river making casting tricky at best. Then Costa Del Tweed at the
end of the week. Seen some fish splashing about quite possibly with the itch.
Ladykirk Head Ghillie
Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Great week for us with challenging cold easterly
winds for the 1st half, and then bright and warm weather for the 2nd half of
the week. But right time at the right place didn't stop rods catching top
quality Springers, just about all liced and all between 6lb to 10lb, with a
total of 13 Springers for the week. A big 'Well Done!' to everyone involved.
Notable
catches include:
-2
Springers on Tuesday morning for Malcolm Taylor in a horribly cold easterly
upstream wind on fly.
-3
Springers on Wednesday morning for John McCann on fly.
-1st ever
Salmon to Paul Knox 10 minutes before lunch, who was only fishing the Thursday
morning and never held a fly rod before (as he says, he can't understand what
all the fuss is about...)
-Paul
Clayworth who got 2 on fly on Thursday afternoon in the brightest of
sunshine.
River is
starting to get quiet low so let's hope those Fish still keep coming”
Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “One fish landed this week with a couple of others
lost. The levels are dropping in nicely for next week. Plenty of availability
for next week”
Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan
reports “Whiteadder dropped away during a week of heat and bright conditions.
Very little activity on the river and no fish to report. Steady at 8 inches for
the start of the week”
Hawick Angling Club reports “The cold winds have been making
fishing on Acreknowe a bit challenging at times. However it is good to hear
that some fish are taking buzzers and some seen rising. Sport should pick up as
the weather warms up.
Williestruther has been fishing well. Small
lures have been taking some fish but Power is still taking the majority of
fish. Barnes Loch, although lightly
fished has been fishing well, with buzzers accounting for some nice fish.
Again the cold wind has been making life difficult at times.Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.
Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.
The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of
Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families
this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom
Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 6” and the water temperature is 56.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Dryburgh Upper, Juction,
Tillmouth, Milne Graden and ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action
this week.
The
forecast this coming week, On Monday it will be a dry and fine
day with long spells of sunshine although high-level cloud may drift over a
times. Another warm day for most, but it will be a breezier day than recently.
Tuesday looks to be a fine, warm and dry, although a bit cloudier than recent
days in the afternoon. There is the outside chance of the odd shower during the
afternoon, but these should be few and far between. Wednesday will be mostly
dry, but heavy showers and the odd thunderstorm will spread in from the south
in the evening. Further showers are expected Thursday as well.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, water levels are dropping in now and
conditions are looking settled this week with the weather due to warm up
significantly Floating lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most
places with Gledswood Shrimp, Monkey, Underghillie and Cascade are all capable
to tempting that springer on half inch to inch or dressed flies in size 8 and
10. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala, 18-20gm tobies should bring results.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
