River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 25th May
Another week of low water conditions but the fish
continue to work their way up through the river system and last week was one of
the best weeks catches for the season so far. Considering the water levels are
pretty much at summer level fish have really pushed up into the middle river
last week where in these conditions you would be expecting the bulk of the fish
to be caught below Coldstream. Weather conditions were a bit more favourable
with the winds swing back round to South West putting a nice wee chop on the
water. As I type we seem to have missed the heavy rain that was forecast and
going by the levels what rain has fallen the ground has taken it in, did notice
that the farmers have the irrigators on now and that will be taken more water
from the desperately low river as it is at the moment. With the level been so
low for so long with all the sunny weather we have had there is a fair amount
of algae on the bottom of the river in the slower pools. Hopefully the fish
keep pushing in this week and hopefully get some decent rain at some point.
Above Kelso 43 fish were reported, with the Mertoun
Beats 9 and Rutherford 7 having the best of the fishing. Fishing at Boleside on
Saturday Mr Scott Connelly landed 2 fish and Mr Craig Drever finally landed a
Tweed Springer after his fishing companions picking up fish regularly the last
few weeks, Not needing to take up badminton now Sir! They also lost a couple of
fish. Fishing at Dryburgh Upper with Alba Game Fishing all the way from Russia
Mr Alexander Nesterov had success during the week also Mr David Thomson managed
a nice fish from the deeper water in bright conditions. Bemersyde had 3 on
Tuesday with Mr Ian Coghill having some success. Lower Pavilion had 3 for the
week, Mr Fox with a nice fish from the Upper Bridge, Mr Justin Young had
success in Cowies and a 3rd of taken from the Cauld.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 50 fish were reported
with Junction 12, Birgham Dub 10 and the Lees 13 having the best of the
fishing. Fishing at the Lees Mr Mark Shaffer landed his first salmon, well done
Sir, Mr Peter Lohse and Mr Martin Tees also had success at the Lees. Lower
Birgham landed 2 on Friday with Mr Stewart Binns landed both on a Green Highlander
and on Saturday Mr Andrew Potts had a lovely fresh fish 3rd cast.
Fishing at the Junction Mr Crispin Rodwell had a good 3 days landing 5 for his
trip inc 4 on Wednesday and lost 2. Mr Mark Nevin also had success. On Birgham
Dub Mr Will Haggas landed some lovely fish.
Below Coldstream 25 fish were reported. Tillmouth
had the best of the fishing landing fish every day on their way to 10 for the
week. On Waltham and Dritness syndicate water Mr Dave Lorimer had a 9lb fish on
Wednesday. On Lennel Mr Bull Treadwell landed a grilse and a sea trout.
On the BDAA beat of the River Whiteadder Mr Callum
Simpson landed a nice fish on Monday.
On the River Till, 5 Sea Trout were reported, 2 at
Redscar and Upper Tindal and 3 on Tiptoe.
126 Salmon and 16 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught
on the Junction beat.
Middle
Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “Decent week
considering the hot conditions, three fish landed and a couple of other pulls,
A first Salmon for Mr Callum Gwatkins on Tuesday, some sunburn in the middle of
the week, then Saturday came a change in weather! Two fish one for Mr Thor
Jacobsen in the morning and then Another First Salmon for Mr Jared Morgan, with
the weather looking cooler and a chance of rain, hopefully this week can
produce a few more!”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A slow start
to the week. Saw very few fish and spent most of the time taking weed off the
fly. But on Wednesday it cooled a little and the weed went away. With better
fishing conditions we had 2 fish Friday and lost one and one on Saturday. I was
hoping that we would have a load of rain over the weekend. But like all
forecast rain at the moment it came to nothing. Hope for tight lines this week
coming.”
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “We started the week
with a couple of fresh fish and another half dozen missed chances with fish not
being kind enough to hang on but as the week went on the offers were few and
far between. We ended with 4 salmon so good result considering the low
conditions”
On Upper North Wark, it’s fishing hut demolition time.
Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A good week with 13 landed and almost as many lost.
All on #12 silver stoat or posh tosh, floating line with short inter tips. All
fresh fish until last two days when it was river fish. Good team of rods using
the right size of tackle for the conditions helped”
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports Whiteadder in
need of water and has been at about 4 inches all week. One fish reported from
upper Beats, a slightly coloured fish at 9lb. Rain forecast over the week end
but doubt it will be enough to see a rise in levels. If it does prospects could
be good for the start of the week“
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of
Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families
this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom
Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1” and the water temperature is 59.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Boleside, Middle
Pavilion, Rutherford, Lower Birgham, Ladykirk, Pedwell and Horncliffe beats should
have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Monday will be a generally cloudy
and cool day. There will be patchy rain, perhaps giving way to heavier and more
widespread rain from the north as the day progresses. Tuesday is likely to be
cloudy at times and cool with some showers, although these should ease later
on. Mostly dry and quite chilly on Tuesday night. Wednesday is also expected to
be cloudy at times, perhaps with a few showers developing from the west. A
mostly cloudy day on Thursday with a chance of rain, perhaps occasionally heavy
as low pressure moves in.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow, Underghillie
and Cascade are all capable to tempting that springer on half inch or dressed
flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Black and Gold Rapala, 18-20gm
tobies should bring results.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
