River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 15th June
Well what a week to follow on from last week, with
the best week of the season so far been broken again this week and that was
with a couple of days been lost due to the rising dirty water of Thursday and
Friday, without that it could have been a 200-250 fish week. But it rise in
water should help this week and keep the fish moving through the river system.
The big rain of Wednesday into Thursday seemed to stay on the east side of the
catchment with the River Whiteadder and the River Till been the worst affected
with both rivers flooding into the surrounding fields. There seems to be a good
mixture of fresh fish and some river fish been caught and a reasonable head of
sea trout in the river. There seems to be quite a few fish falling off this
week with reports of beats losing up to 6 in a day at times.
Above Kelso 91 fish were reported, with the Mertoun
Beats 19, Rutherford 17 and Floors Beats 10 having the best of the fishing, Fishing
on the Mertoun Beats Mr Neil Jones had some great sport on lower landing
several fish on the fly while Mr Iain Wilson of the superb Borders Gunroom in
St Boswells landed 3 on the fly from Upper with a good few lost over their
fishing days. Fishing on Boleside Mr Scott Connelly and Mr Craig Drever
continue to have success on a weekly basis lately landed 4 fish between them.
Fishing at Dryburgh Upper Mr Justin Rose landed a fine salmon and a sea trout.
Before the rise reached on Thursday Mr Jonathan Reddin landed a lovely fish on
Lower Floors.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 60 fish were reported
with Junction landing 19 having the best of the fishing. Mr Graham Whitty fishing
at the Lees landed a nice fish from the Cauldstream with Boatman Paul Hume.
Below Coldstream 9 fish were reported, the water
conditions didn’t really suit the bottom river but Tillmouth picked away and
landed 5 for the week.
On the River Till, a better week with 1 Salmon and
16 Sea Trout were reported, 11 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal, 2 Sea
Trout on Lower Tindal and 1 Salmon and Sea Trout on Flodden.
181 Salmon and 79 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught
on the Sprouston beat.
Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian
Farr reports “That's the spring fishing coming to an end after weeks of
low water we had a small rise last Wednesday up to 2 foot and coloured. This
has pushed some fish up the river with our first Sea Trout of the season on
Wednesday. Thursday was still dark water but a few fish seen running. Friday we
had a fish out the Boat Pool, Chris Bryce about 12lbs a further two fish lost
down Woodside, both bars of silver! Saturday water 9 inches and clear, 1 salmon
Woodside 11lbs and a Sea Trout about 2lbs more rain this week to come keep the
fish on the fin. https://bemersydeestate.com/ “
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Last week
started very well at lower birgham. In the first 3 days we landed 8 salmon and
2 sea trout. Nearly all were sparkly fresh and some sea liced. Mostly around
the 10lb mark. And a couple of 5lb sea trout. Then we had the rain and the
water came up. And although we needed it, would have been very happy without
it. So things quietened down with the river coloured and out of action. We did
connect with fish on Saturday, but unfortunately they got away. But we will be
eager to see what this water has brought in and see what this week has for us.
Tight lines”
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “We had a steady start to the week before we lost 2 days
to a flood. The upstream wind not helping the casting on Wednesday. The river
was still holding a fair bit of colour but perseverance with the fly paid off
with the reward of 1 salmon landed and another lost.”
On Upper North Wark, building works continue with the
foundations been dug out now and awaiting the concrete arriving. Had a cast
during the higher water levels and managed a 6lb Salmon, 2 Sea Trout and Lost
4. The brown trout seem very obliging to.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder has
been in full spate this week as have most of the Local Rivers.
That didn’t deter local anglers Alan Spence who landed a 7lb fish at the peak of the flood on Friday and Colin Tait who had an 8lb fish on Saturday after the river had dropped to steady out at 2.5 ft. Both fish returned. Prospects for the start of the week look very good”

Hawick Angling Club reports “Acreknowe continues to fish
well. The loch was stocked again last week, so there are loads of fish waiting
to be caught.
Dries are proving the best bet, even on really windy days the fish can be brought up to larger dries. Williestruther is being lightly fished but some good catches are being made. Power bait is still taking the majority of fish. Barnes Loch is fishing well and dry fly is taking the bulk of the fish caught. Some excellent catches have been made. Despite the rise in water levels there has not much action on the river, although you would expect to see the odd sea-trout to appear now. So it may well be a cast in the evening. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of
Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families
this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom
Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 1” and the water temperature is 54.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Boleside, Dryburgh
Upper, Lower Birgham and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action
this week.
The
forecast this coming week, some early sunny spells again,
leading into another day of heavy showers and brighter spells. There will again
be the risk of the odd flash of lightning now and then from some of the heavier
showers. There a relatively high degree of uncertainty for the forecast during
the midweek period. At present, Tuesday is expected to be a mainly fine and dry
day with a few isolated showers and a warm feel. Through Wednesday, there are
signs that heavy and thundery showers may encroach on some areas from the
south. Thursday will then be a drier and brighter day
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow,
Underghillie and Cascade are all capable to tempting that springer on half inch
or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Carrot or Blue
Rapala, 18-20gm tobies should bring results.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
