River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th August 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th August

Another consistent week with more heavy deluges of rain around the catchment, fish continue to be caught maybe not in the numbers people would like to be but there is an improvement on last season, especially with the conditions. A proper flood finally hit at the end of the week pushing 10ft on the Norham Gauge. If they are there to come they should come on the back of this. Fingers Crossed.

Fishing on Tipoe on the River Till on the 27th July Mr Fergus Ligging landed a 6lb fish from the Top Stream. The BDAA beats on the Whiteadder had a better week with Mr Callum Simpson been amongst the successful rods.

Above Kelso 30 fish were reported, with the Dryburgh Beats 7 having the best of the fishing.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 27 fish were reported with the fish scattered about a few beats with Sprouston 8 having the best of the fishing. Fishing at the Lees Mr Jonathan Reddin landed a superb fresh 16lb fish. On Upper North Wark Mr Sean Cassidy on his first visit to the beat landed a 5lb Sea Trout from the Snipe.

Below Coldstream 30 fish were reported, with Tillmouth landing 6, Ladykirk 5 and Horncliffe 8 having the best of the fishing. On Waltham and Dritness Mr Ron Martin landed a 6lb fresh grilse on Monday.

On the River Till, catches remained on the quiet side but 3 Salmon and 8 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal and and 1 Sea Trout at Lower Tindal were reported.
113 Salmon and 93 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 15lb Salmon caught on the Bemersyde beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A tough week with the water levels, colour and general unfavourable fishing conditions. But we did manage 3 salmon and a sea trout last week. Looks very high and wet for next week. Let’s hope it drops quickly and we can get back on the water soon. Tight lines. Tom”

On Upper North Wark, 1 Sea Trout for the week landed by Mr Sean Cassidy in the Snipe.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder started to rise on Monday night peaking at 4ft 6 inches on Saturday morning. Anglers took advantage of the run of fish with 4 salmon and three sea trout over Tuesday and Wednesday. At 2 ft 8 and falling but with serious rain forecast for Sunday prospects for early next week could be good as the Whiteadder drops away very quickly. The river is a great standby for lost days on Tweed. Day permits costing £30 can be purchased from FishPal.

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 5ft 6” and the water temperature is 64.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside, Upper Hendersyde, Hendersyde and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, another day of scattered showers and sunny spells, these most numerous during the afternoon. A cool day, with a gentle to moderate westerly breeze. Wednesday currently looks cloudy with outbreaks of rain, some of the rain possibly becoming heavy. Thursday will be a breezy day with the chance of showers moving in on a brisk north-westerly breeze. Friday looks set to become increasingly unsettled, as a rather deep area of low pressure develops. This system could bring showers or longer spells of rain and strong winds.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, intermediate lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow, Ghillie and Cascader are all capable to tempting fish on half inch or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Orange Rapala, 28-30gm tobies should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
