River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 17th August
On Monday we were
greeted by a proper flood getting to over 8ft on the Sprouston gauge which
should have given the river a much needed clean out and get some fish on the
move. As the water dropped and started to clear fish were caught in good
numbers with individual beats reporting double figure catch days on Wednesday,
Middle Mertoun and Lower Floors both catching 11 fish for the day and a few
other beats reporting 8s and 9s for the day, with that, this week was the best
weeks catch of the season so far. A combined catch of 415 Salmon and Sea Trout
were reported with fish been caught on most beats on a variety of methods but
the excellent “Carrot” Rapala proving its worth in the falling coloured water. Hopefully
more of the same this week coming.
Above Kelso 89 fish were reported, with Middle
Mertoun 17, Upper Floors 14, Lower Floors 15, Rutherford 13 and Lower Pavilion
10 having the best of the fishing. Along with the 13 Salmon at Rutherford they
also landed 12 Sea Trout on Tuesday and 10 Sea Trout on Wednesday with Mr
Jonathan Reddin been amongst the successful rods. Lower Pavilion had 10 Salmon and 23 Sea Trout
for the week Mr Scott Connelly, Mr Lee Conway and Mr James Mclay having success
on Saturday. Mr Craig Drever had success at Boleside while on Dryburgh Upper Mr
Bob Mallindine had a nice fish from the Throat Stream. Mr Callum Conner of
Scotia Fishing had a lovely fresh grilse from the upper river.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 97 fish were reported
with the fish scattered about a few beats with Lees 21, Lower North Wark 14 and
Junction 10 having the best of the fishing. On Upper North Wark Mr John
Marshall fishing the fly landed 3 fish 16lbs from the Dub on a black and
yellow, he followed this up with a 14lber from the Snipe on the same black and
yellow then the following day landed a 10lber in the same pool on a Willie Gunn.
Fishing at Lower Birgham Lauren from the USA landed her first ever salmon
weighing 6lbs. Fishing on the Lees Mr Nigel Houldsworth landed 4 from the
Cauldstream on Friday, 3 of these were nice fresh fish. Fishing at the Junction
Mr Steve Robbins had success.
Below Coldstream 29 fish were reported, with Tillmouth
landing 7, Ladykirk 6, Milne Graden 5 and Pedwell 5 having the best of the
fishing. Mr Ian Hayward had success at Milne Graden landed fish up to 18lbs.
On the River Till, higher water level for the week
made fishing difficult and only 2 Sea Trout at Tiptoe were reported.
229 Salmon and 186 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught
on the Milne Graden beat.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “This week
saw the water from last weekend drop fast and clear. We had an incredible
Tuesday morning landing 4 salmon and loosing 3 others. Then 2 Wednesday, 1 and
2 sea trout Thursday, one salmon Friday and a salmon and a sea trout Saturday.
We easily lost as many as we landed this week but nice to get in and amongst
the fish. The water is a good height and hope it stays up a bit and Fingers
crossed this next week continues in the same fashion. Tight lines Tom.”
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “After losing Monday to
a dirty flood we managed to wet the line for the rest of the wk. little lifts
every other day making things difficult but not impossible. It was a quiet
river and we actually caught more than we saw moving and ended the week with a
mixture of 8 salmon and grilse plus 6 sea trout”
On Upper North Wark, nice to be back fishing with some
water running under the boat after the 8ft rise on Monday dropping and clearing
as the week progressed before the rise on Friday night ruined Saturday. We
finished with 3 for the week and lost 3. Mr John Marshall had a good couple of
days landing 3 fish at 16lbs, 14lbs and 10lbs all on the fly.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder
dropped away during the week to settle at 1ft 9 inches on Saturday and in very
good condition. River holding a lot of Grilse at the moment and fishing well.
One 3lb sea trout on Monday followed by a 9 lb salmon on Tuesday and three
Grilse Wednesday. Finished the week with a further three Grilse on Saturday.
Prospects for Monday good but need rain to keep
the level up.”
Hawick Angling Club reports “As usual, late July and early
August has been difficult for fishing. Acreknowe,
has fished reasonably well but it has been hit or miss as far as seeing fish
rise. Again the last hour has been the
most successful. Williestruther has been
very lightly fished the past few weeks. Power bait is still taking the majority
of fish. Barnes Loch like, Acreknowe, is
fishing best just before dark. Again sedges taking most fish. On the rivers the water levels have been up and down
over the past week. A few sea-trout and the odd salmon have been caught. We
need the water to settle down to see what is there. Tickets can be purchased
from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 1” and the water temperature is 58.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside, Upper
Hendersyde and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this
week.
The
forecast this coming week, Monday will remain rather windy,
with further heavy and perhaps thundery showers developing at times. Tuesday
will start on a relatively dry and bright note, though rain or showers will
slowly push in from the south-west through the day. More eastern districts may
remain drier. Dry for a time at first on Wednesday, though becoming very wet
and windy as a further front moves in from the west. Thursday will be another
windy day, with showers or longer spells of rain at times.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, intermediate lines with assorted
poly leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow,
Ghillie and Cascader are all capable to tempting fish on half inch or dressed
flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Orange Rapala, 28-30gm tobies
should bring results.
