River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 24th August
After last week’s
reasonable catches in high and mostly coloured water last week, this week
approached with quiet optimism as the levels dropped and cleared. There was the
odd small lift during the week that brought in a bit of colour and it did
affect the catches towards the end of the week when the water went really dark
beery colour. South West winds gusting into the 30mph area made casting tricky
at times.
Above Kelso 85 fish were reported, with Middle
Mertoun 12, Upper Floors 18 and Rutherford 14 having the best of the fishing. Fishing
on Boleside Mr Craig Drever had a good day on Monday landing 4 fish, on the
same beat Mr Alex Frere-Scott had success on the fly. Mr Kevin McGhee had a red
letter day fishing Rutherford on Thursday landed 4 on the fly with the best
been a 12lber and Mr Duncan Jack landed a cracking fish on the same beat. Mr
Steve Jones landed a 13lb fish from Middle Pavilion on a Gledswood Shrimp fly.
Mr Will Jenkins fishing a fly tied by himself landed a superb 7lb sea trout
from the Battery Pool on the Dryburgh Upper beat.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 127 fish were reported
with the fish scattered about a few beats with Birgham Dub 22 and the Lees 21 having
the best of the fishing. Fishing the Junction Mr John Taylor and Mr Scott
Roberts had success. Fishing at Upper North Wark the Watkin family had a good
day on Monday with young Ben Watkin hooking 7 fish in the morning landed 1 Salmon,
2 Grilse and Sea Trout from the Snipe, mother Michelle and Brother Angus landed
a Sea Trout each in the same pool and to complete every member of the family
catching a fish father Andrew landed a salmon in the Mill Stream on the fly. On
Wednesday Mr Andrew Wallace landed a 10lb Salmon from the Dub and a fresh
grilse from the Mill Stream on the fly. Mr James Robinson landed a grilse and a
sea trout from the Snipe. On Friday Martin Ritchie landed a grilse on the fly
from the Mill Stream and on Saturday Mr Hugh Newton landed a fresh grilse in
the Snipe. Fishing at Learmouth Mr Nick Webster landed 3.Fishing at the Lees Mr
Paul Holland along with his brother Carl and the wives Veronica and Louise had
some good sport. Mr Graeme Hogg and Mr Mike Kemeny also had success.
Below Coldstream 87 fish were reported, with Tillmouth
18, Ladykirk 16 and Milne Graden 13 having the best of the fishing. Fishing at
Lennel Mr Steve Robins had a lovely fresh grilse.
On the River Till, the water level’s dropped back
and the river became fishable again after last week’s high coloured water made
fishing difficult and fish were caught.
16 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout at Tiptoe, 4 Salmon and 11 Sea Trout at
Redscar and Upper Tindal and 10 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout at Lower Tindal were
reported.
393 Salmon and 128 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught
on the Pedwell beat.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A good week
on the river again this week. It started very well with 3 salmon and a sea
trout on the Monday. Some more landed and lost Tuesday. Wednesday we had 4 all
on the fly as the water dropped and cleared, but still having to contend with
very strong downstream wind. There was a little more water come down Thursday
and apart from a couple of lost fish in the morning it was a pretty quiet day.
On Friday the water was still pretty black and the fish weren’t playing ball.
And Saturday we started well with an 8lb sea trout in the first 5 minutes and
thought it was going to be like the beginning of the week. But unfortunately
this was the only fish to go into the net. So 9 salmon and 2 sea trout was
another good weeks fishing but could have done without that water on Wednesday
night. Looks a pretty settled week ahead so looking forward to seeing what’s
there waiting for us on Monday morning. Finger crossed there’s fish and more
fish!
On Upper North Wark, a decent week with 9 salmon/grilse
landed and 8 lost, we also landed 5 sea trout. Mr Ben Watkin landed 3 and a sea
trout from the Snipe on the X-Rap, Mr Andrew Watkin 1 from the Mill Stream on
the Golden Promise tube fly, Michelle Watkin and Angus Watkin landing a sea
trout each from the Snipe. Mr James Robinson landed a grilse and a sea trout
from the Snipe, Mr Andrew Wallace landed a salmon from the Dub and a grilse
from the Mill Stream on a Black and Yellow tube fly. Mr Hugh Newton landed a
lovely fresh grilse from the Snipe on Saturday. All in all a decent week, good
to be seeing a few fish just hope there is more rain to come and keep the level
up for us.
Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell
reports “A up and down sort of week, some days
the fish were there even in the very beery water they were keen enough to take,
other days despite near perfect conditions we struggled. Paul Holland and his
brother Carl along with their wives Veronica and Louise had the lion’s share of
the catch. Graeme Hogg left it to the wire but managed two for his trip. Mike
Kemeny had a fish each day so was happy. I expected to see more fish to be
honest with so much water about, 21 fish for the week is nothing to moan about
nowadays, it'll better next week”
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder
dropped away during the week however we managed 6 fish, all grilse over Monday
and Tuesday. River at 9 inches on Saturday and more rain needed for the coming
week.”
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 3” and the water temperature is 58.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside, Lower
Birgham and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, once any mist and fog burns away,
it will be dry and fine with a good deal of sunshine. Not as warm as on Sunday.
Perhaps a dry start to Tuesday, but some showers or thunderstorms look likely
later in the day, with the storms perhaps becoming more widespread overnight.
Wednesday will be cooler with a cold front pushing a band of rain east across
the region. A dry start on Thursday but a chance of some patchy rain or showers
later in the day, when it will become breezier.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow, Pot
Bellied Pig and Cascader are all capable to tempting fish on ¾” - 1” tubed or
dressed flies in size 6 and 8. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala, 20-28gm
tobies and Black Flying C should bring results.
