River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 14th September
Well this week
signalled the end of the spinning for the season with the river fly only from
the 15th September until the end of the season. I would imagine a
fair drop in the catches come next week unless there is a sudden influx of
fresh fish into the system. The catches did remain consistent again this week
even with the frequent small rises throughout the week. The week ahead looks a
bit more settled so should be better fishing conditions. Strong winds towards
the end of the week made for tricky casting conditions.
Above Kelso 103 fish were reported, with the
Dryburgh Beats 18 and Rutherford 21 having the best of the fishing.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 107 fish were reported
with the fish scattered about a few beats with Sprouston 30 and the Lees 16 having
the best of the fishing. Fishing at the Lees, Matt
Randall with pals Edward Evans, Stephen Marsh Smith and Clive Roberts here for
three days. 7 fish landed on Monday, none of them brand new but more of
unpolished silver, all on floaters with various sink tips, best fish 14lbs from
the Cauld. Matt Randall who’d just arrived jumped in to the Cauld boat
and promptly had a 5lber. Paul and Clive had more luck down at Learmouth
getting two fish weighing 10lbs and 14lbs. Chris major or Craig Scorer
as they both had a fish this morning one from the Iron Gate and one from the Glide
both were coloured. This afternoon Chris was in to them again getting a fresh
12lb hen from the Iron Gate
Below Coldstream 41 fish were reported, with Tillmouth
12 having the best of the fishing.
On the River Till, a bit better this week with 3
Salmon at Redscar and Upper Tindal, 2 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout at Lower Tindal and
1 Salmon at Flodden were reported.
290 Salmon and 29 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught
on the Junction beat.
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Another week of small
lifts making the river unsettled most days but we managed to fish the fly all
week and were rewarded with a respectable 12 fish, the biggest being 17 lb. The
highlight of the week was when a long time Hendersyde Fisher Dr Mike Vaughan
had a hatrick on Thursday taking his family rod at Hendersyde to 300 and his
personal total of UK salmon to over 500.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “An unsettled
week last week. The water came up and down a bit and the weather was tough some
days to say the least! Felt like the wind was 100 mph on Saturday! But we did
end up landing double figures of salmon. And lost a fair few others. One really
positive from last week was getting 2 very fresh fish one with long tailed sea
lice on. Really nice to see something super fresh. More action was had towards
the end of the week so fingers crossed next week starts off in the same vain!
Fingers crossed for more fish!!
On Upper North Wark, a decent start to the week with a
couple of grilse landed and a few lost, unfortunately losing fish continued to
be the trend for the week.
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 11” and the water temperature is 54.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Rutherford and Upper
Hendersyde beats should have a chance of some action this week. If you fancy
testing out the new fishing hut at Upper North Wark there is some availability
towards the end of the week.
The
forecast this coming week, it will be fine with good sunny
spells and just patchy cloud. Feeling a little warmer in gentle westerly winds.
Early fog patches will clear on Tuesday to leave a mainly dry day with spells
of sunshine. However, cloud will thicken later in the day, bringing some spells
of rain and drizzle for a time overnight. Wednesday may be cloudy for a time
with the chance of some patchy rain, though some brightness is possible later.
Thursday will be a drier but cloudier day.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Willie Gunn
Snaelda, Rogie and Red Frances are all capable to tempting fish on ¾” - 1”
tubed or dressed flies in size 8 and 10.
