River Tweed River Report Week Ending 21^st September

Well summer returned this week with a bang but it’s hopefully going to change with this rain that’s forecast this week will give us a decent rise and hopefully some fresher fish entering the river. There are reports of some fresh fish further up the country we can only hope that they are heading down the coast and some autumn sport can be had. Water levels dropped in this week with it nearing summer level in most areas, bright sunshine midweek and easy winds on Saturday didn’t help with the catches. Conditions should be better for fishing this week just hope that East wind doesn’t blow too much.

Above Kelso 74 fish were reported, with the Mertoun Beats 18 (11 on Middle) having the best of the fishing. Fishing at Middle Pavilion Professor Bateman landed 4 and Mr Guy Nardin on his annual trip from France landed 2.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 64 fish were reported with the fish scattered about a few beats with Birgham Dub 10, Hendersyde 9 and Lower North Wark 10 having the best of the fishing. Fishing on Upper North Wark, brothers David and Mark Lyon landed their first fish from the beat with David landing a 10lber on a Willie Gunn Snaelda and Mark landed a 6lber on one of the ghillies flies.

Below Coldstream 30 fish were reported, with Ladykirk 14 having the best of the fishing.

On the River Till, no fish were reported.

190 Salmon and 16 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub beat.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Mr Steven Charlton reports “Seven fish for the week, 5 on Monday including 4 for Professor Bateman, and then 2 for Mr Guy Nardin on his annual trip from France”

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Good water heights last week for the beat even with the beer colour we managed 6 fish for the week could of been more but we were lightly fished middle part of the week small pods of fish moving up the river last week most of the fish where coloured but we did see some fresher fish mixed in amongst them will need some water by the end of week so hoping for a flood now to keep the fish moving up the river”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “It was defiantly a week of two halves. The first three days we had quite a bit of sport and landed 9 fish. A mixture of salmon and grilse. Then the high pressure came in and the bright sun made the pools go quiet. All we could manage was a couple of pulls from Thursday onwards. Autumn must be round the corner though because the leaves are starting to drop and my visiting swallows and house Martins have all gone. Hopefully we'll get a wee freshen up of the river next week as it's getting a bit low now”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A slightly frustrating week just gone. In the first 3 days we touched quite a lot of fish, but they were very reluctant to keep hold of the fly. We did manage to land 3 and one of which was a very fresh little grilse. Then the hot sunny weather came and the takes dried up, not a touch. At some time every day there was a flurry of activity and every fish in the river seems to jump and leap about.... then nothing. Not even a pull. Hopefully the weather cooling this week and the chance of a bit of rain. The fish will hopefully become active again and get on the take. Tight lines, Tom”

On Upper North Wark, water level down to below 0” for us. A few fish splashing about but challenging to tempt. Managed 2 for the week.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A lovely week to be out and about on the river. Team Gould were on the Lees for the week and started well getting some fresh/clean fish and Johanna Green losing a decent sized fish in the Glide. Things went downhill as the weather improved and fewer fish were being seen, 7 landed for the week doesn't reflect the effort put in, but everyone enjoyed the week, even Angus who fell in and got soaked the next day, and the weather was great if not for fishing. 

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder at 2 inches and badly in need of rain. Six fish from lower beat since August 20th despite low levels so a bit of water to get them up would be a great help”

Hawick Angling Club reports “The fishing on all the lochs has been very quiet over the past week. There has been some fish rising but they are very difficult to catch. The lochs have cooled down considerably and consequently the fish are feeding deeper. Buzzers have been worth a go, fished a bit deeper. Sedges at the last hour, if the temperature does not drop too much and are also a good bet. The river has dropped to summer level virtually spoiling any chance of salmon fishing. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 5” and the water temperature is 54.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Rutherford and Upper Hendersyde and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, mainly dry and partly cloudy through most of the day, with sunny spells and just a few isolated showers. Through the evening, heavy rain and strong winds will move in from the south again. Tuesday is expected to be a cloudy, wet and, at times, windy day as weather fronts move slowly east across the area, bringing heavy and persistent rain. With low pressure continuing to be centred close to the northwest of the UK, a further showery and potentially windy day is expected on Wednesday. Wet and windy again on Thursday weather fronts sweep in from the west again.

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, floating lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, Rogie and Red Frances are all capable to tempting fish on ¾” - 1” tubed or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. If the forecasted rain comes may need bigger flies!
