River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 12th October
The week started with big
dirty water coming past and the river was pretty much unfishable on Monday then
settled in through to Thursday before rising again on Friday. The theme of the
week of a lovely howling south westerly pushing gusts of 45-50mph at times hard
work for those on the Oars. The water level remained on the big side all week
making for difficult fishing conditions below Coldstream and challenging below
the Teviot with the colour coming down from the rises. Good effort to those who
kept a line in the water in these challenging conditions.
Above Kelso 64 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 29 were reported and below Coldstream 5 were reported.
Fishing on the Peebles water Mr Connor Alexander
Newcombe had some success landing some Salmon and Sea Troot. On Cardrona Mr
Steven Dora landed 2 fish 6lbs and 7lbs the successful flies were Snaelda and
Cascade. On the Yarrow Water Mr Alex Frere-Scott landed one hen fish. On
Holylee Mr Douglas Galbraith had success. On Dryburgh Upper Mr Nigel Houldsworth
had success in the Todholes Pool while David Clark and Keith Clark also had success.
On Upper North Wark Mr Robert Maundrell had an 8lb fish from the Snipe Pool on
a Cascade conehead and Mr Alex Triffitt had a fine 13lb fish from the Back Of
The Isle on a Tay Salmon Fly Yellow and Red Pot Belly Pig copper tube. Mr
Richie Gallacher fishing the Temple Pool on the Lees landed a superb fresh
21lber.
On the River Till, no fish were reported.
134 Salmon and 22 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 22lb Salmon caught
on the Rutherford beat.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A tough
week. Very unsettled water and very unhelpful strong wind most of the week. We
did land a couple of salmon and a sea trout. But we did lose some others. But
you can’t win them all. The fish on Friday was very fresh and was good to hear
that some downstream of us were also fresh. Hope the rain this weekend doesn’t
ruin this week before it’s started! We will have to see if some of those fish
have moved into our holding pools... fingers crossed! Tight lines Tom”
On Upper North Wark, a tough week casting and rowing with
that wind howling. We managed a couple of fish with Mr Robert Maundrell with a
fish from the Snipe and Mr Alex Triffitt with one from the Back of the Isle.
Both guys had other fish on that didn’t stick unfortunately
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “The 4ft dirty
spate on Sunday night dropped away and fined down very quickly to 2ft 8 inches
on Monday. Nice to welcome rods from lower Tweed who were washed off and a French
Guest managed four fish for Monday and a further fish on Tuesday before heading
home. Sunday's rain was a blessing for Whiteadder with a total of 7 fish,
heaviest of which was 6lb for the week”
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft and the water temperature is 50.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside, Dryburgh
Upper and Junction beats should have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, a dry start with sunny spells, but
cloud will start to build through the day. The chance that rain may start to
move in at the end of the day. Monday night looks set to see patchy rain
overnight and into early Tuesday. Patches of rain should die away to leave it
dry with sunny spells. However, a band of rain will move in overnight. A wet
start on Wednesday, but rain will clear to allow plenty of sunny spells through
the afternoon. Thursday will have sunny spells with a few scattered showers.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, sinking lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Junction Shrimp, Temple Shrimp,
Willie Gunn Snaelda, Pot Belly Pig and Rogie are all capable to tempting fish on
1” – 1.5” tubes or dressed flies in size 6 on the upper river
