River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th October 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th October

The week started with a reasonable height of water (2ft 5 at Sprouston) and still carrying a bit of colour from the weekends rise. With reasonable weather most of the week conditions got better as the week went on, we even had summer arrive back on Thursday before the rain took over for Friday and Saturday pushing the river over 3ft 6 at Sprouston and very heavy muck colour, might be a dubious colour for the start of the week.
Above Kelso 158 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 92 were reported and below Coldstream 7 were reported.
Fishing at Glenormiston Mr Adam Spencer landed an 8lb fish. Mr Rainer Schilcher fishing at Dryburgh Upper landed his first and second Scottish salmon. On Lower Pavilion Mr John Mothersdale landed a good fish from the Generals. Fishing at Upper North Wark Mr Dave Moody landed a 15lb fish from the Back Of The Isle, Mr Richard Waite landed a 12lber from the Snipe on a Willie Gunn Snaelda, Ms Diane Orston landed a 10lber from the Snipe on a Calvin Shrimp and Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine Restaurant in Kelso finished off our week landing a 5lber from the Snipe on a Rogie in truly awful conditions.

On the River Till, no fish were reported. Middle Ettrick Reported 13
304 Salmon and 43 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Hendersyde beat.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “There’s been one or two nice big autumn fish caught by the younger generation recently, Sam Ackroyd (18) with a 17lb fish. Alex Barclay also with a 17lb fish out of the Cromweil on a Willie Gunn Tube, Alex’s first ever Salmon on the Fly. We are on 77 Salmon for the season which beats last year’s total of 63. Sea Trout numbers have risen this year and we have 21 for the season”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “If Carlsberg did perfect water conditions in a week, this last week would have been it. A Monday morning with 2ft2 on the gauge and dropping water. The water dropped and cleared as the week went on, and the hooked fish stayed on better. Our best day was 3 on Friday. Including one very fresh 8lb fish and a small fresh grilse. There were loads of fish hooked and lost in the early part of the week, but good to have some action and feel a pull on the line. Fish were seen running during the week and although fresh fish were caught, none had sea lice on. It was a shame the water changed for Saturday a came up and dirty as things were looking really good. But hopefully it will set us up next week with a similar water to last week and we can get back amongst the fish! Fingers crossed and tight lines. Tom

On Upper North Wark, a decent week on the beat for fish been hooked every day but sadly more than our fair share got away. 4 landed for the week.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder hovered at just over a ft all week and nothing banked. Saturday’s rain put the river well in flood but falling fast overnight. More rain forecast Sunday but river drops very quickly and could be good later in the week for washed off Tweed rods.”

Hawick Angling Club reports “The fishing on both Acreknowe and Williestruther is open till the 30th November. There has been very little fishing activity on Acreknowe, but the few rods that have been out have caught some fish. Slow and deep is the best chance of a fish. On some of the milder days fish have been seen rising. Power bait is still taking the odd fish on Williestruther. Barnes has now closed for the season. Despite the rises of water over the past weeks very few Salmon and Sea-trout have been seen, and even fewer caught. Most of the fish that have been caught have been coloured. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3ft 6” and the water temperature is 47.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside and Dryburgh Upper beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Monday will be a fine and dry day with a good deal of sunshine once any fog lifts. Cloud looks set to thicken in places during the afternoon. Tuesday will be a cloudy and rather breezy day but it will be mostly dry with just the odd shower here and there. Turning wet later, however, with rain arriving from the west in the evening and overnight. Some heavy rain is expected into Wednesday afternoon, but rain will eventually clear to the east. Scattered blustery showers will then persist into Thursday.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, sinking lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Junction Shrimp, Temple Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, Pot Belly Pig and Rogie are all capable to tempting fish on 1” – 1.5” tubes or dressed flies in size 6 on the upper river

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
