River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 26th October
Well for what looking
like it should have been a decent week with the rise from Sunday giving a
reasonable height and falling on Monday morning catches would have been
expected to have been better than what was caught. The lack of fresh fish
coming in isn’t helping and a seal cruising around the Milne Graden area
definitely won’t be helping the beats further down the river. Overall seems
that the fish in the pools are proving hard to tempt and not a huge amount else
I can add to that. I did get a report of some kelts caught at Gledswood on
Saturday and fish been moved of the gravel on the Teviot when wading about. With
frost and colder weather forecast this week it may still up some of the
residents.
Above Kelso 101 fish were reported, Between Kelso
and Coldstream 56 were reported and below Coldstream 3 were reported.
Fishing at Peebles Crown Water Mr Connor Alexander
Newcombe land a good size fish. On Dryburgh Upper Mr Robert Ives has success in
the Boat Pool on a Red Frances, Mr Dougie Grove and Mr Mike Redmond both having
success in the Mungie Pool. Mr Paul Pritchard landed a fish at Bemersyde. Mr
Douglas Galbraith landed 2 to 16lbs at Holylee. On Upper North Wark Mr Gary
Derrick landed a 12lb fish from the Snipe Pool on a Willie Gunn Snaelda. Mr
Hugh Newton had a good week fishing on West Learmouth landed 7 fish including 2
at 16lbs one of which was very fresh over his 3 days on the beat. The infamous
Spittin’ Vomit fly doing some damage! On the BDAA Whiteadder water Mr Colin
Tait landed a 14lb hen fish.
On the River Till, no fish were reported.
196 Salmon and 40 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 21lb Salmon caught
on the Traquiar beat.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A slow week
last week. The week started with a good water height and steadily dropped all
week. It’s exactly what you want it to do, slowly drop and clear. A couple of
frosty mornings and good weather conditions. But the fish didn’t want to play.
We landed 2 for the week and a first ever fish for graham at 13lb , lost a
couple and saw a lot of fish that didn’t like the flavour of flies we were
putting through them... the positive was that we saw plenty of fish in the
pools splashing and even saw some fresh fish running in the middle of the week.
Another pretty steady week of conditions ahead, so some new flies, new rods and
better luck hopefully!”
On Upper North Wark, Mr Gary Derrick had all the action
at the start of the week landed 1 and unfortunately another 2 got away. Plenty
splashing about but hard to tempt.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Last weekend’s
rain brought the Whiteadder up over a ft where it stayed all week. Six fish for
the week to 14lbs which brings the total to 71 salmon and 13 sea trout for the
season so far. Prospects for Monday look good but river will be falling and no
rain forecast”
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water temperature is 45.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside and Dryburgh
Upper and Upper Hendersyde beats should have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Monday will be largely dry with
plenty of sunshine, although it will be chilly. The slight chance of the odd
shower. After a chilly start, Tuesday is expected to be another dry and settled
day with sunny spells. Another cold night is anticipated into Wednesday. At
present, current indications suggest that the bulk of Wednesday daytime will be
dry but increasingly cloudy, as rain gradually encroaches from the west. But
Thursday, milder and wetter is expected.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, floating or intermediate lines with
assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Junction Shrimp, Temple
Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, Pot Belly Pig and Rogie are all capable to
tempting fish on 1/2” – 1” tubes or dressed flies in size 6.
