River Tweed River Report Week Ending 14th March

Well the start stop season was more like stop start this week with the bulk of the week seen dirty water flowing past with 3 lifts in the water each bringing more colour into the river. Well done to those who braved the elements and kept their fly/lure in the water and some success was had.

Like many of the fishermen and woman of the Tweed last week we found ourselves visiting the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells on a flooded off day. Sadly I couldn’t make it to Eoin Fairgrieve’s Loop Demo Day at Tweedwood on Saturday as we were fishing but I head there was a great turn out and a very enjoyable day was had by all. We did manage to pop in for a cuppa at the new warehouse in Kelso always very welcoming and great to catch up.

Back to the fishing and catch reports are a bit sketchy this week, I believe Nigel Cooke had success fishing at Lower North Wark at the start of the week and Mr Paddy Hogg had a nice fish from the Whiteadder. Upper Hendersyde ended the week with 2 fish on Saturday.

Above Kelso 5 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 7 were reported and below Coldstream none were reported.

On the River Till, I heard of some sea trout caught at Twizel but no fish were reported online.

13 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 8lb Salmon caught on the Lower Birgham beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well after our success last week when the river was finally fishable, we were going into the week with high hopes and full of optimism. Unfortunately as all so common this year the river had other ideas and brought more water into it. Not what we wanted or needed. So the first part of the week we fished in some pretty high and changeable conditions to no avail. Then more water came on Thursday and Friday. But amazingly for the Saturday the water had dropped rapidly and cleared an awful lot, our last chance of a fish for the week! The morning didn’t produce anything, but in the afternoon soon after lunch we managed a 5lb sea trout off the bank and then an hour later we saw the boat head to the bank, the sight of a splash of water and the net swooping collecting a fin perfect, fresh as paint spring salmon. 8lb of salmon perfection!! What a way to end a tough but very enjoyable week. Like every weekend we hoped to start the next week with a lower water than what we ended on, but true to form as the snow has melted, we will be looking at a high but hopefully quickly dropping river. It dropped and cleared quick last Friday, Fingers crossed for the same today. When we have got on and fished we have had some good results. We just need some settled water. The longer range forecast looks like it will be settling and with availability the next couple of week could well be worth a try and get some of these perfect springers caught! Tight lines Tom.”

On Upper North Wark, well another tough week with dirty water the main stay for the week. Mr Graham Nichols managed a wee sea trout on the fly from the Mill Stream on Monday and we have brief contact in the same pool on Saturday but it spat oot the Willie Gunn Snaelda.

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 4ft” and falling with the water temperature is 42.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Rutherford, Upper Hendersyde, Hendersyde, Lower Birgham and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, a fine, dry and chilly start. Through the morning, cloud will steadily build, with rain arriving from the west in the afternoon. Later in the day, southwest winds will strengthen significantly. Tuesday will likely begin with a mix of sunny spells and showers. Later in the day, rain will likely encroach from the west as winds freshen. Early rain on Wednesday should clear away to the southeast to leave another day of sunny spells and showers. Sunshine and showers expected again on Thursday.

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are looking challenging for the start of the week sinking lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Black and Yellow, Junction Shrimp, Temple Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, and Rogie are all capable to tempting fish on 1.5” – 2” tubes. On the spinning front a big toby should be worth a go.
