River Tweed River Report Week Ending 13th June 2020 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 13th June

The weather changed a bit the last week with the wind swinging round to the North East and with the water levels dropping back to summer level seemed to move the bulk of the catches back towards the bottom river. The algae which is covering the bottle of the river bed is a pain at times when your flies touch it they are coming in covered in slime. A good flush is required to clean up the bottom of the river and get things moving again. The little lifts so far and just stirring up the algae and making it a nuisance to fish in. The catches although down from last week are still decent for the time of year and with reports of “lots” of fish in the bottom river the next proper lift should see some good sport up through the river system.

Above Kelso 40 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 110 were reported and below Coldstream 112 were reported. With the best fishing been at Tweedhill where 32 were landed. Ladykirk 26 and Hendersyde 19 also had reasonable catches for the week.

On Middle Pavilion a good start to the week with 3 landed on Monday with Mr Fielding landing 2 with the best fish weighing 9lbs. Mr Maurice White fishing at Lower Pavilion had good sport landed 4 fish up to 10lbs with Cowies proving productive for him. Mr Ian Bennet fishing into the dark targeting Sea Trout managed to land 3 salmon in the dark on his Black Gledswood Shrimp. Bemersyde landed a 6lb fish from the Woodside on a Size 12 Gledswood Shrimp on Monday, on Saturday Mr David Conroy landed a 6lb fish from the Stream on a Monkey Fly. Fishing Dryburgh Upper on Friday Mr Neil Jones landed a nice fish from Arthurs Run on the fly. Mr Tom Carter landed a nice Sea Trout fishing at Mertoun. Mr Richard Farr picked away at Rutherford landing 3 fish. Mr Simon Cotton stripping a Sunray Shadow at Hendersyde on Wednesday landed a lovely fresh fish. West Learmouth continue to pick away with James Armstrong been amongst the successful rods on Friday. Mr Alex Frere-Scott landed 2 on the Lees on his small collie double. Mr Jonathan Reddin and Mr Steve Robins had some good fishing landing 7 between them at the Lees and 4 between them at Ladykirk. Jonathan landed 4 on the Lees and 3 at Ladykirk while Steve landed 3 at the Lees on a Size 14 Aurora Cascade and 1 at Ladykirk.

Waltham and Dritness Beat had another good week of low water heights, which suits the beat and plenty of fish in the river, most rods who fished managed to hook or catch a fish. 20 salmon were landed, lucky rods were, Ron Martin 5 (five fish), Jack Weightman 3, Mike Wood 2, Dave Lorimer 2, Billy Robson 1 and Martin Inkster 1.

On the River Till, no fish were reported.

262 Salmon and 9 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 18lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub beat.

Tweedswood Head Ghillie Mr Kevin Patterson reports “A few salmon made the move upstream but we are still away away from getting any no’s in pools. We managed one salmon and seeing very little we are fishing hard with local fishers keeping to the government recommendations of travel which I feel is only right it will change soon but today it’s back to easterly and 10 degrees strange swings in fronts daily . We are fly only at Tweedswood so it makes every fish tough to get but it’s quite satisfying when bc we get one. It’s total credit to new owner that he wants fly only and we have had some good feedback from it. Let’s face it if you get one on the fly you seem to remember it A lot longer as it’s just something totally different. The beats got a lot of new ideas coming through and we are trying to upgrade all things that need going with croys through to anything that’s broken or needs repaired which is good in this hard time says a lot but looks very positive for Tweedswood going forward”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “The end of another week, the new normality is starting to feel normal... ish. But one thing that all the rods have had in common is the joy, relief and delight to actually be on the river. And even more so when there is a great chance to catch a fish! And I know that there is more to the fishing than catching fish, although it is very welcome when it happens, the enthusiasm for people to be out enjoying our river and sport has been fantastic. We ended our week with 4 salmon and 2 sea trout. So a good bit of sport was had. We were certainly helped with the 2 small rises in the river level. One at the beginning of the week and one at the end. Mostly fresh fish and plenty seen on some days. But we have to remember we are in June now and looking back in records it’s only the last few years that have produced good numbers in this month. Especially with some of the quality and size of some of these late run spring fish we have been getting. Is this a sign of things to come? Or is it delayed fish into the system? Who knows, but great to have the fish and brilliant to see some of the steady catch numbers throughout the system. We all like to be the place where the fish are caught, but as a river we need returning fish coming in, which we have had recently. We had another small rise in the water over the weekend and is looking good for this week ahead. Hopefully the weed has settled after the water on Sunday. But looking forward to getting back out first thing Monday and see if some of the many fish in the bottom of the river have made the jump up and headed up to us. Here is hoping for another good week and maybe even better than last! Fingers crossed. Tight lines, stay safe and be sensible. Tom”

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.

Berwick and District Angling Association reports “Fishing on the BDAA waters recommenced on Friday 29th of May with little hope of success for the salmon rods. Due to the “excellent weather” we have experienced for several weeks, river levels were down to the very lowest level of normal, according to SEPA. Confounding expectations 2 fish were caught on Beat 6, Clarabad Mill on the 29th followed by a further fish on 6th June. Even the upper beats got in the act with Dave Paxton recording a 7lb fish, which he described as a “proper scrapper”. There was a further report of a fish lost above Allanton Bridge. Angling effort has been low however there have been some good hatches including a few Mayflies up to beat 2 and some excellent brown trout have been seen on the river. Well worth a cast with a dry fly or nymph. Fishing has been challenging with quite a lot of algae drifting downstream clogging lines and flies. Some freshets have helped the situation well, washing much of the weed away but we do need a spate to clean out the river and, more importantly, to get the salmon, grilse and sea trout with a Whiteadder postal address running. Let’s hope for more than a spot of gardeners rain soon.

Hawick Angling Club reports “The Club have extended their sales of Salmon Permits for the season until the end of July. With the right water height salmon will be caught from now on and the Teviot gets a good run of Sea Trout. Permits are priced at £150 for visitors and £80 for local residents. Anyone interested can email the club Secretary Drew Dickson on drewdickson@talktalk.net”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 7” and the water temperature is 58.

Looking at the availability for this coming week with no availability on the lower river I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Bemersyde and the Pavilion beat’s should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, it looks set to be a mostly cloudy day with showery outbreaks of rain at times, some of which could turn heavy, especially in the afternoon. Rather muggy. Light winds. Remaining rather warm and muggy over the next few days with showers. Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy with showers, some heavy and possibly thundery. Wednesday then looks to see sunny intervals but with slow-moving heavy showers breaking out, which could turn thundery. Mainly cloudy for Thursday with showery rain, which could be heavy at times.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Aurora Cascade, Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor and Ghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 10-14 dressed hooks. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
