River Tweed River Report Week Ending 20th June
The catches really tailed off this week with the warm muggy weather and easterly winds not helping much. The river temperature is starting to creep up again and this in increasing the algae growth that is lying on the bottom of many beats. The river badly needs a good flush out to freshen things up. Reports from down the river are consistent with good numbers of fish in the pools and fish moving in and out with the tides which given a rise should get them moving up through the system.
With the resumption of fishing, salmon are again being tagged by boatman to monitor recapture rates. If you catch a floy tagged fish (a tag below the dorsal fin), please record the number on the tag and inform The Tweed Foundation or the boatman on your beat, who can pass on the information. The Tweed Foundation report a bumper smolt run from the Gala Water, In addition to being used to catch fish for tagging, the Gala smolt trap has also been run throughout April and May to catch samples of salmon and sea trout smolts leaving the Gala Water. A record 15,960 salmon smolts and 2,277 sea trout were caught in the trap, which represents only part of the total run that leaves the Gala Water. This shows that tributaries like the Gala Water continue to be extremely productive for juvenile salmon.
With the reduced catches this week information was a bit harder to come by, Mr Stewart Robertson landed a 3lb Sea Trout in the Dish at Bemersyde on a Size 10 Gledswood Shrimp. Mr Ian Bennet landed a 5lb Sea Trout on a Size 16 Dry Blue Hen and Yellow and also kept up his landing salmon in the dark recently with another fine fish from Gledswood. Mr Iain Wilson from the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells landed a fish on the Junction on Saturday also losing a couple of others. He landed 2 grilse during the week which is good to hear that a few grilse are starting to appear.
Above Kelso 16 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 40 were reported and below Coldstream 59 were reported. With the best fishing been at Ladykirk where 19 were landed. Tillmouth 17 and Tweedhill 16 also had reasonable catches for the week.
Waltham and Dritness Beat, a lot of fish showing in the pools but proving to be harder to tempt we landed 6 salmon for the week, lucky rods were, Dave Lorimer 4 (four fish) and Mike Wood 2.
146 Salmon and 18 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 17lb Salmon caught on the Milne Graden beat.
Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “A quiet week on the fishing side but saying that 2 salmon landed and a fresh sea trout water disappeared over the week and not looking like any heavy rain to come next week hope thing will change soon also not being fished hard due to the restrictions on us”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well a tough week in the river this week. We ended up landing a salmon and a sea trout. And a few other little pulls and losses. But on the whole a very quiet week. The promise of rain and some water in the river this week left us ever hopeful of a flood but as in the last few weeks came to nothing.... even at the end of the week the thunder showers promised, hardly touched the gauges at all. But there is some rain coming this weekend so ever hopeful we look forward to seeing if it brings us a rise of water. Pleasing to see some fish caught lower down the river but we need some water to help them to be encouraged up to us. So looking forward to this week we ideally would benefit from a little water, no east wind, fresh run of fish and easily taking fish....we don’t want too much... but who knows what will happen. On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.
Hawick Angling Club reports “The Club have extended their sales of Salmon Permits for the season until the end of July. With the right water height salmon will be caught from now on and the Teviot gets a good run of Sea Trout. Permits are priced at £150 for visitors and £80 for local residents. Anyone interested can email the club Secretary Drew Dickson on drewdickson@talktalk.net”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 60.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Bemersyde, Rutherford and Tillmouth Beat’s should have a chance of some action this week.
The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow, another spell of rain will spread north and eastwards, heavy locally. Windier with a freshening south-easterly breeze. Weather systems will bring heavy, persistent rain on Tuesday, most likely over western areas. It will feel fairly mild but there will be a moderate to brisk southerly wind. On Wednesday, there will sunny spells but a chance of sharp showers. By Thursday, high pressure in the Atlantic will ridge north, bringing drier and calmer weather conditions and it will feel warmer too.

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Aurora Cascade, Silver Stoat’s Tail, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor, Execuitioner and Ghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 10-14 dressed hooks. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go.
