River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 1st August
After a really humid
week last week which is not much fun for the fishermen or the fish the catches
did drop a fair bit with only 119 Salmon and 29 Sea Trout reported for the
week. Given the weather conditions this was not unexpected. Monday greeted us
with persistent rain right across the Tweed valley and a rise was sure to
follow, by Tuesday morning the river was up 3ft at Sprouston and quite dirty.
Some of those who had a go managed to winkle out some fish. As quick as it came
it was nearly gone with a 1ft 8” drop by Tuesday the dark beery colour held in
the water but a good freshen up for the river and the fish responded with a
good increase in the catches Wednesday/Thursday before the 30 degree heat wave
slowed things down on Friday. Reports are that many of the fish caught were a
good mix between summer salmon and grilse with a high percentage being sea
liced.
The River Tweed Salmon
Fishing Museum will be officially opened by Her Grace the Duchess of Roxburghe
and Sir Gareth Edwards at 6pm on Thursday 3rd September 2020 in the
Town Hall, The Square, Kelso.
Last week there was
success at West Learmouth for Mr Andrew Bendall and Mr Will Haggas landed 2
fish best 16lbs on the fly at Hendersyde. Mr Jonathan Reddin and Mr Steve Robbins
had a brilliant sport at Sprouston landed a good mix of summer salmon and
grilse. Gary and Lucinda Ewin managed a fish a piece fishing at Tweedswood. Mr
Simon Scargill landed a nice hen fish in the Glide at the Lees. Mr David
Foreman landed 4 fish before 10am at Horncliffe on Friday. Mr Alex Knox of the
fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso had a good day at Carham landing 3.
The Cotton Family had a good end to the week on the Junction landing a good few
fish and Boatman Gavin Brown landed a cracking fish from Hempseedford.
Above Kelso 98 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 185 were reported and below Coldstream 166 were reported. With the
best fishing being at Tillmouth where 34 were landed. Junction 28, Ladykirk 27,
Tweedhill 27, Sprouston 25 and Hendersyde 23 also picked away during the week.
Waltham and Dritness
Beat reports another week of water, over 3ft on Monday evening, as it began to
fall we managed 6 Salmon/Grilse this week. Best fish 18lbs. Lucky rods were, Jack Weightman 3 (three fish), Dave
Lorimer 2 and Jim McAdam 1.
I am delighted to now
be able to bring to you the fishing reports from the Tiptoe beat on the River
Till. The beat is approximately 1 mile of right bank fishing and can fish 2-3
Rods. For booking or enquiries please contact Lucy Caroll on 01890883060 or
email fish@till-fishing.co.uk.
Tiptoe fishing this
week 3 Salmon/Grilse were landed with Mr Fergus Liggins landed a 9lb fish from
the Pulpit on a Willie Gunn he also lost a fish after a 10 minute battle at the
Mile Marker Pool. Mr Mike Carr fared better in the Mile Marker Pool landed 2
Grilse and 1 Sea Trout on a size 14 Cascade.
449 Salmon and 99 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 18lb Salmon
caught on the Waltham and Dritness beat.
Lower
Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Tom is having a well-deserved break
and his exciting informative reports will be back next week”
On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed however we
are aiming to reopen on the 1st of September. Any enquiries or
booking requests please call Martin on 07825334427.
Lees Head Boatman Mr
Malcolm Campbell reports “18 fish for the week which were all good fish
mostly fresh the best being 16lb caught by Ed Marshall. The week was in two
halves with the best of it being the first half. We saw plenty fish and more
smaller very fresh grilse were about. In the second half of the week the
weather quietened things down and by Saturday we never had a pull despite Team
Marshall casting for miles. It looks like the coming week could be the same
with the heat to build from Thursday onwards. For the full Lees report go to
the Lees page on Tweedbeats and find Malcolms fishing report”
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom
in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from
the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.
Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.
The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of
Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families
this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom
Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 7” and the water temperature is 60.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Tweedswood, Dryburgh
Upper, Pedwell and Horncliffe beat’s should have a chance of some action this
week.
The
forecast this coming week, Sunny spells tomorrow but showers
will drift eastwards at times. Cloud will thicken later on in the day, bringing
heavy rain overnight. Moderate westerly winds. Tuesday may turn wet with
outbreaks of rain moving in from the west during the day, this rain could turn
heavy. It will remain cool and become windier with a freshening south-westerly
wind. On Wednesday, it looks to continue unsettled and windy with outbreaks of
rain for a time but it may turn dry later. Sunny spells on Thursday but a
chance of sharp showers developing.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer
level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most
beats with Copper Cascade, Black Frances, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor and Ghillie
Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 10-14 dressed hooks or ¼” – ½”
tubes. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the
spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
